So now the G.A.S. is bubbling away...
My mind has been fulminating with it, while I looked at
old Firebrand SGs and other cool equipment.

But I'm about ready to pull the trigger on this puppy:

Gibson Acoustic J-45 Walnut AG 2018 - Antique Natural

I've been listening hard to my acoustic tone recently
and thinking about what else I might do. In this case, I'm
getting a new guitar that suits me, instead of lucking into
deals I could afford.

To make this possible, I have some gear for sale.
I'm going to sell my old '66 Fender J-Bass, and hope to
get $6000 for it. Am I dreaming?

I'm going to sell my 1975 Mossman dread, my road companion
of decades, and a big Tumba drum and a couple Djembes
as well as a number of pedals.

I'm likely to just let Elderly Instruments sell them for me on
consignment, even though they take a big chunk... 15%

But that's if I get no takers from people who know me.
 
yeah, mine might not be worth as much as the one in that link
because I removed the sunburst... which looked exactly like the one in the picture.
Well we'll see what offers I get. That one sat for a while, it seems.

But of course, it wasn't owned and played by a big star like me... *laughs
 
You're not the first to ask if I'm ok...

Thanks for the good thoughts. I'm actually ok. I have two other basses,
and have fallen into the habit of taking them out to gigs instead of the '66.
Maybe I've become fickle, but that lovely Gibson calls to me, and my old
warhorse guitars seem like the same old thing. Someone else might be really
inspired to have them. They have inspired me for decades. I have it on record...

I've been working on a new recording, and have been using a number of my
collection for the various parts. I recorded about six new songs in the summer
and fall of 2017, really enjoying the sound of my fretless Warmoth bass.
For basic tracks, I was using my old 1936 Martin 0-17. The studio engineer said it
had the best sound of any guitar I had brought in to play through his mikes.

Maybe it was because I was using the old Martin so much, but I got two very
serious bids on the instrument at the end of 2017, and after some serious thought,
I accepted one of them, and shipped old Rosebud off to a new home. I believe
I got an excellent price for the old Martin. And the buyer is very happy to have it.

Some guys buy and sell guitars every week. I'm not like that. And from all the
posts of yours that I've read, I know that you aren't either. But I've decided to
reduce the amount of gear that I have sitting around. I'm going to be 70 this
year, in September.

I'm still gigging, amazing as that seems. But I'm going to sell my house too, at some
time in the near future. My girlfriend has had one knee replaced, and needs to do the other
maybe next year. So we'll look for a one story house. Carry less stuff. Turn some of it
into money that we might need later. So I seem to be in the purge mode, rather than
the G.A.S. mode. If I get a brand new Montana made Gibson, that will be my
consolation.
 
Wish I could snag that lovely time capsule of a bass from ya Col. but that is more than I spend on vehicles much less guitars....I have a 99 Subaru I would swap ya for it ;) ---
Certain she will find a good home and a Montana Mamma will be yours soon

Very true. I don't really want a bunch of guitars because I don't want some of them to go unplayed due to having too many. I really feel like I'm near my limit for guitars. I've got a lot of sonic bases covered and I enjoy all the differences in sound and feel between them.

So, as you embark on a new season in your instrument lineup, you have my best wishes.

You'll get dinged a substantial amount for the finish being gone. If it was a refin you might be able to fetch $5k, but I think in that condition you will need to find the perfect buyer and may be able to get $4k if everything else is original. I think most people would want to do a refin on it and that isn't cheap to get done properly in nitro.

I think that maybe i'm dreaming... *grins But if you don't ask, you don't get.

I'll end up taking the best offer I get, I'm sure. I'm wishy washy about selling it, so if I don't
get any good offers, I won't cry any tears. I 'll just play it, and let my daughter worry about its
value after they pry my dead cold hands off it.
 
Here's the fun part: My girlfriend just got tickets to the Antiques Road Show. *grins
We'll be at the Rochester Michigan show on June 14. I don't know when that show will air, but probably
sometime in 2019, if our "civilization' still exists then. A lot can happen in the next year or
so, not much of it any good.

Too bad I sold the old Martin, because if I walked in with a 1936 Martin 0-17 in one hand
and a 1966 Fender J-Bass in the other, I believe I'd get some air time.

So I'll take my chances walking in with the Sluggo the Bass and Amber, my 1975 Mossman.
It would be very cool if they put us on the air, but if all I got was a free appraisal, I'd be happy.
Elderly Instruments wants $150 to appraise my bass. If the experts at the Antiques Road Show
gave me a free one, that's awfully nice of them. *grins ...It would help me sell it for sure.

But I still have to find the right buyer.

Right now I'm really enjoying my shiny new J-45.
I've modded it already! I got a new TRC from Philadelphia Luthier Supply, which says J-45.
I figure that will unplug the first question I anticipate from audience members:
"What kind of guitar is that... it sounds great!"
