I don't think this is a good move, but we'll soon see:
"Gibson Brands, Inc. has filed a multi-million dollar lawsuit against the parent company of Dean Guitars and Luna Guitars in a Texas court."

Really stupid move. Not only is it going to cost them a lot of goodwill, but also by going for the more serious offence of counterfeiting, they are going to have to show that people were being fooled into thinking these other guitars were in fact Gibsons. Good luck with that - instant fail, I would have thought.

Very disappointing. I know and like Mark Agnesi and I figured his original video was an ill-conceived moment of exuberance in his new position. But to see them actually go through with what should have been empty threats is so unfortunate, especially given the timing and the current groundswell of goodwill they've received from the guitar community. This move feels like something Hank J would have pulled; definitely did not see it coming from the new guard.

Agreed. This looks bad. So bad, I don’t envision anything good will come of it.
They should’ve stuck to going after the actual counterfeiters...the ones putting the name on the headstock...using the open book, the ones actually stealing trade dress, and/or trademark...
But that’s difficult, as the majority are overseas, and remain fairly immune.
I understand that they have an obligation to defend their intellectual property, or give it up....but...Dean?!?!...really?!?!...
The drawings in the article are fairly clear on the headstock...not even close(just my opinion)....the body is fairly close, but there are differences....if they’ve used a trademarked name(Moderne)...well that’s a nono.

This is beyond ridiculous.

Haven't Dean V's and Explorer shaped Z's been around for decades?
Allasudden this new CEO decides he's gonna sue them about it?
...and the 2 headstocks are totally different by the way.

Hammer Vector 800.00 at Sweetwater right now----

THE GIANT DEAN HEADSTOCK is so far and away from the Gibson V that is retarded to even compare the two

How about EASTWOOD

thats not even TRYING to hide the direct rip off.........

(And a V I might like to own.....hhmmmmmmm)

They're going after Dean because Dean sells a LOT of guitars and has a good rep.

Did they go after Hamer when Hamer did this?
I don't remember.

Gibson should spend more time making GOOD guitars and less time in court -- just MHO--
-- if the "fakes" werent as good or BETTER for fractions of the cost they might not be so embarrASSed & apt to sue!---just a thought ---

here is a neat idea to the new CEO -- or CFO -- or GIBBO HEad DIck in charge these days ---whatever his levi straus made n china name is anyway--

Go back and research all the stuff they did in the NORLIN era--- all the stuff the faithful HATE-- but that WORKS -- well--
Maple necks and fretboards
pancake bodies
unique shapes
bi laminate necks
bolt on necks
RESINWOOD for christ sake you cant even set the foogin thing on FIRE to kill it!

and ..............DO THAT .................
Ive yet to own or rub my junk on a single Norlin era Gibson that didnt work flawlessly-- set up-- intonate-- hold tune ---and sound KILLER WICKED GOOD-- and they are all OLD AS CRAP and beat to shite---

I (and many others I know) have played and owned NEW Gibsons that WOULDNt and didnt --pass the above "Norlin Test"
