Gibson Conundrum

My 60s Tribute LP came with that circuit board and quick connects. The first thing I did was rip that crap out and wire it up normal. I replaced all the pots and so I could keep the original harness intact if I ever wanted to put it back I also replaced the jack and the switch. Then I was able to swap any pickups anytime with no problems.

The guy who sells the connectors on E-Bay and Reverb has a chart to sort of the wire order. Nice guy!!!

This has me thinking about the effects if the 2 coils are wired incorrectly, or the other options.
I'm thinking if one coil start and finish are reversed, it may cancel the hum bucking effect.
I think I recall if you want the out of phase / Peter Green deal, the magnet needs to be turned to be out of phase with the other pickup.
I guess if you wire them parallel, the polarity has to be right / opposite to keep the humbucking effect.
I reckon all this can be found on the web, sorry for the rambling.

The Dimarzio PAF Pro I bought used sounded really weak when I first installed it - in the neck of my semi hollow.
It didnt hum like a single coil from what I remember, or it wasnt so loud I took note of it.
I wired it the way it came; one pair spliced, one lead with the shield, and the hot by itself.

Turns out it was wired wrong - I dont recall exactly but I think one coil was the spliced pair, so it was only operating as a single coil.
Anyway, sorted it using the Dimarzio wiring diagram - it sounds great.

PIA, but it gave me the practice and experience both troubleshooting the pickup and fishing the semi-hollow.

I dont know if it is the same seller, but I found this.
Once you get this sorted, I see no benefit to abandoning the pcb if it all functions properly.

I've changed PCB's to hand wired harnesses and the only change I noticed was $169.00 less in my account.

Guys with a heavy electronics background will affirm that only capacitor value - not construction - makes a difference and guitar circuit milivolts are too low for the size of the conductor medium to make a difference.

But, this industry depends on your loyal following, so please buy, buy, buy!!!!!

I'll tell you guys something.

People here may give me poop because I tell them that they are hearing things that marketing has conditioned them to hear, but not a day goes by that someone doesn't email me and thank me that I saved them from wasting money needlessly on gear.

Last night at rehearsal, we had a guest player with a Telecaster through a Twin Reverb. He had the worst case of "I can hear the subtlety" that I've ever seen, so we invited him to record some songs during the session with us, then make all his EQ changes and re-record them.

He was pissed that what he "heard" in his head, could not be detected on the playback, even when playing the tracks side by side.

The gear YOU currently own is better than ANYTHING used to record the songs you grew up listening too.

Just plug in, and play....

I have had very similar experiences with Gibson pcb boards. I have learned to wire them up using the CORRECT wiring schematic (live with them) and I have also yanked the POS out and wired it up how I know how to. With regular pots. (live without them)

I'm sorry that I am just now reading this. I went through the same issues with my sg. And one of my LPs.

I took this picture to keep for future reference.
