Gibson 500T Repair/Modification:

long enough to splice more wire on? would be my guess Robert (Dawson)

What's the minimum useable length for the conductors on a pickup???
I just measured a 57 Classic lead for you at 15" exposed from the baseplate, but it's not "the minimum", it's just what the length is. This was a neck pickup & I measured it because it was close at hand & I just woke up (still on 1st coffee). I like to leave the lead full length & just coil it up in the pickup route under the pickup. I can check bridge pickup length for you, 57+, BB2, if you can give me about 1/2 hour to get my act together. I do have a neck pickup with the lead cut to length that came from my Heritage 80 Standard LP, I'll dig it out & measure for you. Cheers

I appreciate you checking. I only have 6'-1/2" of braid, but a full 12" of inner conductor.

Almost finished. Magnet polarity reversal confirmed with ohm meter...

Ok, I just measured the lead of the neck pickup out of the Heritage 80 at 11" exposed from the baseplate. When I have needed outter braid quickly in the past I've stripped it out of an old piece of instrument cable. Maybe you could do that to extend your outter braid. Cheers

Good thinking....

I don't think this is a 500T. Those had 3 magnets and ceramics tend to be very dark, almost black - see post #13 above...I think we are actually dealing with a Gibson HB-L (Alnico5) 13.4 - 15.3KΩ. I think the neck is a Gibson HB-R, which is 7.1 - 9.1kΩ, but don't ALL of the 'HB's have a PCB on the bottom???

Could it be a super-hot 498T??? It measured 14.93kΩ @ 80° F recently....

  • Gibson Burstbucker Pro..........(BB1/Alnico5).................7.4KΩ
  • Gibson Burstbucker Pro..........(BB2/Alnico5)..................8.0KΩ
  • Gibson Burstbucker 1.............(Alnico2, not potted).......7.5KΩ
  • Gibson BurstBucker 2............(Alnico2, not potted)........8.0 - 8.4KΩ
  • Gibson Burstbucker 3............(Alnico2, not potted)........8.2 - 8.8KΩ
  • Gibson '57 Classic.................(Alnico2)...........................7.4 - 8.5KΩ
  • Gibson '57 Classic+...............(Alnico2)..........................8.8-9.1KΩ
  • Gibson Dirty Fingers..............(2xCeramic)......................16.0 -16.6KΩ
  • Gibson Mini-humbucker...........(Alnico2)...........................6.0 - 6.4KΩ/8.1K(bridge)
  • Gibson 490R........................(Alnico2)..........................7.2 - 7.8KΩ
  • Gibson 490T........................(Alnico2)..........................7.9 - 8.5KΩ
  • Gibson 498T........................(Alnico5)..........................12.3-13.5KΩ
  • Gibson 496R........................(Ceramic).........................8.3 - 8.6KΩ
  • Gibson 500T........................(3xCeramic).........................14 - 15KΩ

Photos below taken at about 70° F

Thoughts???

How do they put 3 magnets in a HB? Would they be thin and stacked to standard thickness? If so, what did you see when you changed polarity?

On a Gibson 500T, two thinner magnets take the place of the wood spacers...check my thread "Being Out Of Phase Is Cool" in 'Pickup Pantry.'

Here's a web pic I found with the 496r on the left and the 500t on the right.
I see now what you're talking about with extra magnets used as spacers. Really thick ones too.
