Hey all. The attached pic is a Frankenstein 4 piece kit I found just about to be dumped, so I rescued it.

I bought the throne, snare, snare stand and kick pedal, but the rest was about to be junked.

For a freebie kit, it doesn't sound too bad.

It has Zildjian, Shalloch and Paiste cymbals, which is a couple of hundred bucks worth there...

I have a Zildjian 18' crash cymbal but no stand... I'll have a look around and see if I can find one locally.

The kick drum, floor tom and rack tom are a generic brand here in Australia called Ashton, but the snare is a 1980s 14x6.5" Pearl I picked up for AUD $60. It suits this kit, as at one stage it had been left outside by a previous owner, and had rusted. I cleaned it up as best I could, but some pitting is visible if you look closely enough.

I have a Roland V Drum kit, which is really good, but I saw this poor kit being dumped and had to give it a home.

The wrap on the rack tom was gone, and it was painted a rather crappy orange/brown. I've just painted it in a silver sparkle and put a clear coat over it, but I think it will need a complete strip, seal, prime and refinish, as the pores in the wood are all very visible.

Looks like I have a project for the weekend.

When I get the chance to visit a music store again, I'll likely pick up some new heads for the batter sides. I prefer the resonant side to be removed, as you get more of a "bark" out of the drums, like they're talking back to you. It's something I learned from John Densmore from The Doors. And he's right, they do sound awesome.

Another thing I need to do is give the cymbals a good clean and polish. They're quite badly oxidized, so a good polish is a must. Hopefully it will give them a slightly brighter tone.

Watch this space for updates.
