Fredman Mic'ing or Sennheiser?

I received a bunch of gift cards for GC and I always wanted to try this mic technique.?

As of right now, I'm mostly pleased with the single SM57 I have in front of my DSL40CR. It captures pretty close to what I hear in the room, which took a ton of trial and error to get.

My 212 is a different story. I can't seem to capture the sound right with the same SM57. So I am wondering if the Fredman setup will help.
Or should I go a different route with the 212? Maybe get a Sennheiser e609 or e906? I hear they arent as hard to capture what you actually hear. Some reviews say they arent as "harsh" as the SM57.

Before I go get the Fredman clip and invest in another SM57 I wanted to get some feedback from you guys who are more experienced in this.

Yea, I find the '57 harsh as well. I never understood it being used to be honest. A decent large diaphragm condenser mic will take you a lot further.

I can’t say it enough….Audix i5….all day, over the 57 here…and I’m diggin my Sen e609 too, but the i5 has been on my recordings for years…my 57 is laying around the studio with a cable attached, but hasn’t been plugged in for a while now.

@Sapient thats a really nice mic! It's just past the edge of what I was looking to spend. The reviews I read on it so far seems like everyone is blown away by it. The specs on it are really nice! love the accessories it comes with, although I dont see me using the pop filter anytime soon.

@Thatbastarddon I've seen that mic around here and there on line and I think it's comparable in price with the 57 and 609. I've even read somewhere somebody used it in tandem with a 57 and said they went well together.

@BFT Gibson what mics are those?

That's cool. Then I'd recommend maybe this as an alternative: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1601325-REG/sony_c800gpac1_c_800g_pac1_studio_tube.html/

Yep. I have one of each, plus the MXL DX-2. They all have their useful moments. They seem to play well with each other…mostly.
The DX-2 and the 609…

…and the 609 and the i5…

…to be fair, there were two fairly inexpensive ribbons used on that last one too, but the core, dry, amp was mic’d with the i5 and the 609.
edit: in the Sabbath song video, there is pictured on the full stack, the mic set I started with - Sennheiser 421 on the upper Kustom cab, and 609 hanging on the 1960b. That pic was taken during setup. I didn’t like the sound of the 421 on that rig, and pulled it after the first take(unused). I replaced it with the i5, and moved the 421 over to the bass cab(where I liked it much more, when mixed with the Audix D6). I haven’t done much recording with the black Kustom cab, and it’s new(ish) speakers…yet. I never bothered to take an updated/correct pic of the final mic setup on that cab, with the i5 in place…my bad.
