I never had any problems with the volume knob location and maybe that is the Strat was my first serious guitar. A daily thing with my is not to bump, slam or walk into stuff. Common sense just blended over to any thing that won't get out of the way.
Tuning and tremolo are not a problem because I expect a failure. After a tuff work out I tune or check the tuning, Fender or Gibson.

My recent, informal association with a certain pair of guitarists has brought me into contact with a lot of Hagstrom guitars and chats about Hagstrom in general.

Here's one for Adrian - originally released by Hagstrom in 1965 - it features 24.75" scale, vintage style Tremolo and a unique control layout.

They make a model with mini humbuckers too and an 8 string bass version too...

Here's a soundclip from one of our cover song demos. I used the bass and drum track as a background to demonstrate the 1992 DiMarzio DP404 Stacked Single Coil in action through my Blackstar ID-Core 100watt 2X10" combo. This is the combo as shown above in post #4. Note the presence of the Bill Lawrence 220kΩ treble cut on bridge circuit, installed in 1988 and still in place and working. Bridge volume and tone controls full up for this effort:
