For all you cat lovers out there..

Cats are “opportunists”.
I am totally captive to my one kitty.

I have had cats and dogs all my life. However, at present after losing our 3 dogs and 2 feral cats who died from ages 14-16 for the dogs and 1.5-8 yrs old for kitties during '22-'23, I am down to one cat. Our lone surviving feral has grown so trusting of me since 2022, that he is literally now the most affectionate cat I've ever experienced. From a 100% feral fear type cat to one who sleeps in my bed and on my lap, chest, arm pit, licks my beard, and is just a snuggle bunny. He is just beyond words of how a wild animal can transform.

Another thing about my buddy " Blackie" is that in his 4+ years, he transitioned from 0 time inside our house until let's just say, Spring of last year. Then by the Summer, we could entice him to venture in to eat a bowl of food, and as time progressed, sit near me or on my lap briefly on the 2nd or 3rd step to our upstairs. As Summer was heading to Fall, he began sitting on my lap longer and longer inside on the steps or just outside our door steps too. Eventually he became brave enough to venture all the way upstairs and even into our bedroom. 2023-2024 is where he began to lose the bulk of his fears. I think the most endearing example of this would be the times he hopped into the trunk of my Toyota Camry filled with tools while I was doing cooling system work on my Ford Truck. Same for when he jumped into the tailgate area of my 4 Runner filled with tools too. He began sitting on my lap in my easy chair, and had the first all night sleep in the bed while the wife was in Cleveland taking care of her dad during his August hospitalization.

My little helper hangs out with me as I do the dishes, take trash to the curb, and he is now even hopping up under the hood of my Ford Truck whenever I do more work on it.
His other unique development of more indoors time is, that he has only pooped 2x on the rug, NEXT TO a cat box I was trying to get him to use. I have yet to see him Pee in the house or cat box, but he seems to be almost self trained to let me know he wants to GO OUT to do his stuff.

For a guy who hates cat boxes, what more could a human ask for?

I recently lost my Josie after a little more than 13 years together. She was feral when I adopted her so I never knew exactly how old she was.
She liked to play rough and would scratch & gently bite; I used to tell people she was half wild when I took her in, but after years together she was half tame.

She'd lost a lot of weight in the last year and was too frail to jump up on the bed and curl up by my shoulder like she did for so many nights.
I put up a ramp for her but by then I think she knew she was too weak & wobbly to use it.
Still finding cat toys in out-of-the-way places; still thinking I see her out of the corner of my eye.
I miss her. But we had a good run together.
RIP Josie.
