Five Watt World:

I have found this to be the case for me. As I have mentioned in a thread a few days ago. I have 4 guitars now, but I can see getting it down to 2 or even one. As I had said in the other post, I believe when you play that one instrument you become more proficient in playing that Instrument become one with it, This what I have found flying R/C Aircraft. I have two that I fly, but I am drawn more to the one than the other. Since I have been doing this now for a few years my flying skills have increased. This is the same with a guitar the more you use the same one the better your playing will be. Each guitar has a different feel different sounds, Which one do you find yourself playing the most? To me that's your answer. Same thing goes for amps as well.

I agree...even when I switch between my 2016 Les Paul and the Les Paul Custom Replica, because I have them set up exactly the same, the transition is just seamless...again, I use the second guitar for E-flat tuning only...
 
He has quite a number of god points here, but he overlooks that fact that to many players collecting and acquiring different guitars is actually a pleasure in itself. The need is secondary in many cases. But no, most players do not need many guitars. I would definitely get by very well with three, and for many years I only played one. But it's a lot more fun to have a few more...

What I have come to realize, though, is that I am no longer interested in having guitars or gear I am not 100 % satisfied with. Lately I have sold no less than three guitars (and of course I have bought three new ones instead...), and I will likely sell three more in not too long. My Epiphone Dot, Epiphone '61 Reissue Special and the Telecaster I put together myself will all likely go in the foreseeable future. Not because I don't like them, but because I never seem to pick them up. They simply don't inspire me as much as they used to. The two Epis will be sold as is, but the Tele will likely be sold as parts (it has a few really good parts and some cheap ones), the pickups alone will probably fetch about 75 % of what the guitar would go for if sold as is... I might consider selling my Epiphone EB0 bass as well (technically it is my wife's, but she never plays it), and buy something a little better. My point is I no longer want stuff I never use: I'd rather have a few REALLY good pieces than lots of decent stuff.

But I will always suffer from GAS. There simply is no cure for that.
 
I like that he discusses the need vs. want factor. Of course I only need one guitar, but I have six because I wanted them, for one reason or another. I will say this though: the years and having owned far too many guitars have taught me a couple important lessons - I favor 24-3/4" scale, hiumbuckers and set-neck solidbodies only. I don't like other scale lengths, I don't like bolt-on necks, I don't like chambering/hollowing/weight relieving and I really don't like single-coil pickups. Hence, what I want is somewhat limited and in the end I have six Gibsons.

I have GAG -Gig Acquisition Syndrome. I get jazzed about performing more than anything. The guitars just make that possible.
 
How every many you happen to want and can afford for what ever reason you want them ;)
I get need vs want - but, if you like collecting than you 'need' more than one - lol...

"Collection" means a plurality. One is singular.

I was a one-guitar guy for a long time, just didn't feel like I needed anything else. Hell, some part of me wishes I could go back to that for sure.
 
What about.
"I went and collected the (Inset object name here) that he/she owed me"
It was one thing but there was a collection involved.

I think collection has 2 meanings?

1: a bunch of stuff
2: the act of collecting but not in a verb form
(the collection of an old debt for example)
 
LAst I checked--- I are an adult--- if I want 2 -- I can have two -- if I want 222 I can have that too---(thats a LOT of 2's) ---

I only "NEED"--(officially--ZERO) -- well lets see-- true "need" ----I suck -can barley play--and I do not play pro or record-- so I dont NEED any --
I want--- ALL OF THEM--
sanity falls SOMEWHERE in the middle -- which -- keeps me from murdering large hoardes of stupid people---- so

send me guitars NOW to keep the balance of the world population the same.....

no really--- Im --uh--taking donations any old thing --- send it :)

OR --- 1 MEEELION DOLLARS! either one works

many of mine are an "investment" and I paid way LESS than market -- or future market value-- so REALLY instead of "x" $$$ sitting in a savings account gaining next to NO interest-- or handing $$ to a BROKER to MAYBE make me $ but charging me to do it -- or LOSE it --- I prefer-- to hang my savings act. -- well one of them-- on my walls ---
and PLAY with them -- improve them -- and eventually move them along for ---- ahhhh yes -- PROFIT :)

I've been known to give a few away now and then....
 
I have 3 because I traded 1 and got 2. I like a back up. Just like my amps....I like 2 playing in stereo but also so if something happens....like my TSA30 going down.
 
I play one, but it’s a lot of one, a Variax, I play mosty 3 settings, strat, Les Paul and Acoustic

I have 8 guitars now, I had lots more but sold quite a few, and a few amps, for me I wasn’t sure what I wanted, didn’t even know about Variax until Xmas. Then I knew I wanted one lol

I also play the Fender Strat. But mostly just that one guitar, hopefully I will get better if I stick to one, who knows ehh
