Firefly Guitars

wow-- those look great.......to bad they went with the stopbar/bridge not a single lightbolt --- woulda made taht Jr irresistible---

I personally went a different used route on the telecaster recently --- spent 100 more than those above--but got a USA MADE "vintage" model lol
Peavey Generation series

@Hackmaster ---look a new flavor--- TELE-- with that same glorious Peavey neck ...............

I know --- you hate me.........

Grote-

A PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT-----

I fell for the hype-- (o.k. there is no hype) -- but 169.00 for a HOLLOW BODY (all be it thinline) with a DOG EAR-- JAZZ GUITAR.....was very alluring --
I like the style-- and the rich tones-- Ive owned Ibanez --I think @Ghostwolf has now???
and a BIG ol 50's era Harmony that @Hackmaster and I swopped junk rubbing duties with---
so -- I HAD a credit at Amazon --- and I got this thing to the door for 129.00
-- HOW BAD COULD IT BE?!?!?!?!?!
Grote 1.jpg
grote 2.jpg

stem to stern-- its good-- the inlays on the headstock are nice -- the nck (not sure I think maple with some "roewood-ish fretboard"
inlays are -- well HUGE-- but nice--
body is light-- finish is nice --
I have found only one "paint drip/booger" on the low E area of the side of the headstock -=-

fret ends are NICELY finished-- though the FRETS them selves could use a going over with some steel wool/polished--but are functional as is--
Tuners-- -leave a little to be desired but work
the HIGH E string BROKE while I was trying to tune it-- so it has FRESH D'addario 10's
bridge-- again not stellar-- but WORKS and
thats really the EXTENT of the negatives--

HERES ONE FOR YA @Drumoid --- IT INTONATES 100% outta the BOX!!!!! -- yep--

finish and burst are well done (I got the next to loast of this color -- red is all that is left I think (there was a Natural as well)
and it smells like cheap plywood furniture from walmart---------

UPS-
tone is great (rich and full through the Mesa)
playability excellent--- low decent action good feel
familiar neck medium deep really but narrow-- easy playing--
the hum-- from a P90 through a HOLLOW guitar is STUPIDLY QUIET!!! its QUIETER than several SOLID body guitars I own through the same amp-- same settings--
output jack seems well installed and solid--
pots roll well and have no scratch--

IMHO -- TOTALLY worth 129.00 --- totally--

Will it REPLACE my Gibsons??? if I could ONLY OWN 1 GUITAR would the GROTE be it???? no
is it AMAZING AND WONDERFUL??? no
its a good guitar -- for the $
I LIKE the genre and style but the FAT thick Jazz BOX bodies always put me off (like acoustics -- dont like fat bottoms)

Tuners and a better bridge would be HUGE upgrades -- (it still wouldnt replace my Les Paul Recording guitar)
but-- its FUN to play -- it makes GREAT tones and -- really is 100% FUNCTIONAL as is --
no MAJOR surgeries needed

IF you want a P90 "JAZZ" gutiar that is CHEAP AS DIRT ---- do it

this is on par with
The Loar LH-301T-VS Archtop Guitar
AND one of these -- which I also played at GC last week -- as a matter of fact they Feel VERY VERY similar

Which both are in the 500-650.00 range --- and honestly they were VERY VERY close

I know its drama, which I detest personally, but watch 60 Cycle Hums latest video a couple days ago about Firefly. Ryan was a fan of them, flaws and all, and they didnt handle the constructive criticism well, even though he likely sends a lot of players their way.

I find it super strange and a little bit out there that there could be any kind of butthurt for such an inexpensive instrument. Problems should be expected at this pricepoint - you do kind of get what you pay for in life.

-- not exactly -- did you see what I paid for the Grote--

Im always curious how the "get what ya pay for" thing works is a good thing or a bad thing--?

the grote is ON PAR with OTHER brands mentioned -- also made in China-- that are 3 times the price -- Epiphhone -- DAngelico-- Loar--Ibanez....
so did I get what I paid for? or did they?

WAIT NEWS FLASH -- the BOTTOM side of the 20th fret is a little sharp ------ thats worth 400.00 discount right there lol

The neck is very much like this one
merlot1.jpg

The Ibanez (as I recall) was superior acoustically-- but plugged in this Grote and that Ibby (with P90 in neck pos.) are very very close as I recall the tone....

BUt no --- Im not going to sit here and CLAIM its AS GOOD as a Gibson 335 or a Collins or a Benedetto Bambino
1572484799579.png

but-- aint many folks coughing up 15k for one of them babies

its a great hollow body -- make jazz or OLD school slide blues noises on for cheap--- guitar -- that costs about what you pay for 1 person for 1 day at Disney land ----Im having way more fun with the guitar ---thats all

I almost bought one the other day, same color...
Just how does it sound acoustically? Is it serviceable as a late night, recliner noodler?

I cant get over NO HUM (well not running any gain either ) but wow -- dead quiet -- as QUIET as Roberts SG he spent hyours and thousands of dolalrs on getting it ot NOT pickup radio stations---- THAT QUIET in a P90 HOLLOW BODY ---mind blowing--
its Quieter than the Blueshawk with 2 P90s and a DUMMY coil silencer! --- I set it on the chair and went to get a drink I forgot it was on---- till the cat WHACKED the strings with her tail---- scared me to death ----quiet

I’ve been thinking about a parlor guitar, or a F-hole hollow body, for the recliner...something I can hear clearly, and not disturb others in the house...some nice, bluesey, P90 action is always a bonus.

Not a Firefly, but you guys got me checking out 12 String guitars when the mention of a Parlor Guitar was brought up.

I listened to this one 2nd after another Fender, the Tim Armstrong 12 string Hellcat. I have the 6 string version and like it alot. The 12 string demo was nice, but nowhere near as nice as this Custom Shop one.
