feeling a little....disappointed

A few years ago I found a custom pickup winder that made a set for my VMNT that were absolutely killer. I'm not very fond of mainstream equipment so I've always looked for different ways of doing things. I've never really liked the big brand pickups that I've tried from SD, Dimarzio, and EMG so I was super stoked that these custom winds were so d'mn good.

I ended up buying another set for my Schecter that were more vintage style, a take on a set of PAF's but much hotter. Again, perfect in every regard.

So at the end of March I reached out once again to get a set built for my new Solar. The guy has some new styles coming out and he was working up two new signature pups for some quasi-YT-celebrity types. Since I knew he was super busy with all the new gear, I told the guy I wasn't in a huge rush and tried to play the nice guy.

A few weeks later I reached out to him and asked how things were going. I got a reply that he was super swamped because of the new releases and he had a ton of orders and was working non-stop. I did the nice guy thing again and let him know, "no rush, make sure you're taking time out to enjoy life. Just let me know when you think you can get my set done." I got no reply.

So yesterday I sent a follow up email once again, three weeks after my previous email. He replied that he was still not done and was busy with taking an Electrician test. I know most of these guys work FT and do these things on the side, but I thought he was working on these other new releases and then getting to my set soon after and it sounded like he wasn't working on any of them. I kind of felt like he was taking advantage of the situation and my patience.

Now I write this down, I'm on the fence on how I feel about this whole deal, but I finally received a reply this morning that he's going to get to mine this week. I told him that I was going to be out of town for an event on the 3rd of June and I wanted to get them installed before I left. My event has nothing to do with guitars but I omitted that detail.

I have one more guitar I'd like a new Pup from this guy, but it will be a while before I pull that trigger and I'm going to approach it with a little less patience.

So, to be clear, we approaching the end of May. This tells me you've been waiting for just about two months. I've read in other forums of people waiting longer than that for pickups from custom winders.

Also, keep in mind that taking an Electrician test is usually not just something you do for kicks. This may have been a requirement of his job and he was given a short timeline to get trained and tested. Of course, I'm just guessing, but in my line of work I do encounter this sort of thing.

I wouldn't write the guy off, yet.

I'd have a hard time writing him off, as he's a very skilled pickup maker. I'm close to the Electrician trade so I totally understand what he's going through. I've heard about people waiting for long periods for custom gear like pups, pedals, and the like, and I just don't get how some are waiting 8, 9, 12 months for gear. I can understand amplifiers but man, I'd be sick waiting that long for a pedal.

I think this thread is more just airing things out to hear them for myself. A minor annoyance really.

Sometime, reach out to Jose at Planet Tone in Colorado. Custom pickups wound in Colorado, fast service.

Getting closer. He sent me pictures about a week and a half ago that he had them done, but was wrapping up a few more projects. I thought he would have had them in the mail to me, but nothing yet. Then today he posted them up on FB, so yeah, they haven't shipped. Disappointed, but now the anticipation is feeling like Christmas. That's a good thing.
