Favourite OD to goose your favourite amp?

Some really good replies and interesting pedals. I've gone for a mega-quote, not sure if it's gonna work... :alien:

Not sure it qualifies as a OD pedal but to my ears best ive tried so far.

Yes! The Distortion+ is clearly named, but to me is an OD pedal. & anyways, everyone's ears are different, we use pedals in different ways, etc...

My favorite OD is a Fulltone GT500.

I know Fulltone get a bad rap in another thread, and many folks aren't too fond of them, but I also like them. I kinda think in some ways they are closer to the Classic pedal line than boutiqque which is something I like about them.

However it's completely unnecessary with my favorite amp, a Mesa Rectoverb 25.

Very good point. My Randall RD 1 did superb overdrive (not just distortion, no clean at all...), very hard to find a pedal that could equal the amp tone.

.I got a Fulltone 69 MK2 fuzz thats great.

Fuzzes, especially when the guitar volume is turned down, cold be OD pedals. I've been struggling with fuzzes for a long time, and although I keep trying to get good sounds out of my Catalinbread Katzenkonig I rarely do (when I do, it's when I remember to use the guitar volume to control the pedal).

A lot of times I like to use it in front of the Mesa just for the buffer.

That's another very interesting point, and the OCD V2 I just bought makes a point of highlighting that exact point.

Crowther Hotcake.

I don't know anything about that pedal. I'll watch a couple of Youtube vids to educate meself and avoid work!
(Three weeks of working from home here in Korea.)

he amps are too good to corrupt it in a way..maybe the blessing of running everything off the guitar knobs vs stomping all day..have 4-5 dif degrees of clean to lead all set on guitar...

Yeah, I like to do that too. On SGs, just going from 10 to 8 gives you 3 different tones, going down gets you clean - it's a good way to get tones. But setting the 'on 10' tone is sometimes nice with an OD goosing that amp - especially an old Plexi style which without a pedal won't get the great breakup without too much volume/dBs...

If we’re talking OD pedals and not actual distortion pedals, I’d suggest the venerable TubeScreamer.

Oh that's just an OD is disguise. :D

After that, I’d go with a TubeScreamer.

May I suggest, if you like them that much, then get yeeself a $69 Hotone Xtomp - the TS808 sounded identical (and I mean IDENTICAL!) to the real thing. You also get 3 or 4 other tubescreamers to play with. Nobody here seems to like the Xtomps, but I loved mine.

Rangemaster: Nothing can goose an already cranked amp like a great treble booster.

That is true. Now, you're making me want a treble booster... o_O

Zendrive: Dare I say it: "Dumble-esq" sweet tones and overdrive. Works exceptionally well with blackface style amps.

I've only tried it with one amp and the Xtomp version, but didn't blow me away; maybe it was a bad 'patch'.

Direct Drive (v3): Very versatile. Any amp. Lots of gain. I like this even better than the excellent Fulltone OCDs (V1.3 and v1.4) that I used to have.

Yeah. About 30 seconds after I ordered/paid for an OCD last night, I thought to myself - why didn't I get the Direct Drive instead???

Keeley Fuzz Head

I had a Son of Fuzzhead, and it had a lot of settings from OD to distortion upto full on fuzziness; behind the Wampler Velvet Fuzz, it'd be my next favourite - both do a really nice OD, imho.

TC Electronics MojoMojo

Many people like this pedal, and it's pretty reasonably priced. I had one and was not impressed, but that was through my RD1, so maybe I should give it a fair go through an amp that needs an OD.

EHX Soul Food

Yeah, that's nice. I had one too. The only downside was the treble beyond halfway rather irritated me. A nice always on pedal.

doesn't leave Indiana, ship to Florida and back to Indiana before arriving in Minnesota

:D

I just use the MXR’s you posted

MXRs are just so good. They do a nice little Timmy now that has me tempted:

Is this supposed to be like Paul Cochrane's Timmy? Is PC working with MXR?

See, that’s the funny thing. I already have a TubeScreamer, which, interestingly, also sounds exactly like...(wait for it!)...a TubeScreamer!

Weird, huh?
So what's the deal with all the different TubeScreamers? 808, 909, etc. Do they all sound different, or are they just new versions and then they reissue the old version? Kind of like Coke, New Coke and Classic Coke.

The TS-808 was the original, and supposedly is the best. The most common is the TS-9.

There is actually a simple mod to make the TS-9 sound more like the earlier TS-808. As I recall, it involved replacing the opamp and a resistor. I did this mod to my TS-9 many years ago. I didn’t notice much of a difference, but I also was using a really cheap amp at the time, so that has to be taken into account. I never bothered to reverse it back to original TS-9 specs.

But, I really like the TubeScreamer. I use it mostly to add some hair on my clean channel and to push my high gain channel into more saturation.

I have a pair of them to send to you. I think Boo and Too would enjoy some warm California weather for a change...

In reality, I have been using the TC Electronics MojoMojo for the last couple of years. Seems to do what is needed for an overdrive. Now this morning I just ordered an EHX Soul Food that should arrive on Monday provided it doesn't leave Indiana, ship to Florida and back to Indiana before arriving in Minnesota. I am really excited to try this one. I was researching Klon clones and it seems to do a pretty reasonable job plus they are cheap. I get plenty of drive out of my 2203, but I think this could just give me that little extra to take it over the top when the other blokes are maxed out on 10. Report next Monday.

Soul Food is nice. I had one and then jumped ship for the MojoMojo...

Makes my JTM 45 breath fire.
just reminded me of Christmas Eve...1 and only time anybody ever complained,,,, tried boosting my jmp45 for the first time.,,6l6 & fender power now...holy moly..did it get Brootal on the 4x12 greenback...i mean loud but tight loud...the lows were super defined & highs so clear...i actually almost felt sick inside for about half an hour after it...the neighbor had his family over in his back room which sits parallel to my room...said it sounded like it was in their house...it was insanely tight palm mutes...i would def record that for a song

Lots of reasons to love those old Bluesbreakers, I'm running KT-66 in the power section.

The Friedman helps the low end, those amps can get flubby.

Wish I woulda got the deluxe.

Not so much for the switching capabilities, but the mid control.

Although, I been cranking the mids at the amp, and I can't complain about the sound at all.

Makes my DSL breathe fire as well!
I would have gotten the single channel. That's all my guy had in stock, and possessing zero patience.

Well. You know the rest of that story. :dood:

its interesting..mine does not flub with the fender power,,basically we went for a really pissed off bassman but with mid emphasis..soon as i got it back..it actually led me to all the Silverfaces i got.,,then the VM 2266 came around...kt66...yes sir !!

You mentioned 3! :D So, if you do want another then the $69 Hotone Xtomp is a great option because it sounds eggsackery the same (did I mention that?).
