Farewell Gord

Mr. Lightfoot played a big part in my palette as a guitarist, and he once played a song for my wife and I at a concert in Saskatoon on the day I proposed to her, way back in '93.

Sad day for Canada, and all folk music
Me too Brad. I’ve made comments in TTR before that I like to listen to the heavy stuff like several of the guys here share….. but when I pick up a guitar I play Gordon Lightfoot. I’m not joking about that. Love his music. Love playing it. Back in the previous century bought the song book for the “Sundown” album. What I’ve enjoyed about his music is that it’s in a range I can sing along with. And since he liked to use the Capo, if it was a little high for me…. Just take off the capo.

Sad day here on this side of the border as well.

That tune I posted, Sundown is a masterpiece to me.

From composition, to performance just brilliant IMO. Stop and think a minute..... he has a whole catalog stretching 4 or 5 decades of this quality of material. Definitely sorry to see him gone. His music will live on for sure.
Sundown was one of the first songs I tried to play that went beyond the C,D,G with an occasional minor chord thrown in that I’d been playing. Needless to say, I struggled with the muscle memory on that one. I did finally progress to the point where I can play those chords. Now….. Play them and sing the song like Mr. Lightfoot. That’s a whole other story.

Another song from that album, “Seven Island Suite.” Great song. Not a difficult chord in the song. I’ve never played it right. Can’t get the timing. My issue. It’s written in 3/2. I was in band and marching band. We primarily did songs in 4/4. I have always had a problem counting in 3s. Wife and I took dance lessons at the local YMCA. You know that dance called the waltz. Nope. Not on your life. Never learned it. Salsa. Swing. Foxtrot. No problem.

Yes, those tunes are deceptively easy. He had his capo, open tunings, and excellent ears.

I don't feel so bad, I at least can count off the waltzes, dancing however just proves why I'm a guitar player. Just not a power of three type of guy I guess.
