I finally found this thread to dredge again.

Kenny is showing SSD5 in Reaper.
I might try that.

That's what I use, and I've been pretty happy with my results.

About as involved as I get with SSD v5.5 is; drag and drop patterns onto a track, snapped to grid.

If an accompanying guitar riff is a little bit off beat or unique, I might MIDI edit a couple of snare hits here & there.
