Excitement at work!

More excitement than I care for, actually. We had a small fire in the ventilation system at work today. Not in the production area, but in the upstairs offices. No less than six firetrucks, two ambulances and two police cars turned up...

Thankfully it was a lot less dramatic than it souns. The firefighters let me sneak back into the brewery to finish the brew I was doing. No people or beer was harmed in the process. And no water was used by the firebrigade, so no material damages either. The owner of the building was supposed to refurbish the ventilation two years ago, but never did. He got told off by the fire chief today, so I reckon we will have new ventilation shortly.

The place I used to work....a Micro$oft datacenter...thus used to happen all the time....
Not actual fires, mind you, but the alarms would sound and firetrucks would roll out. There are VESDA (very early smoke detection apparatus) fire suppression systems everywhere. These work by using laser beams to measure any particulates in the air, and once they reach a certain threshold, OOOOWEEEEOOOOWWEEEOOOWWEEE, and everyone would have to evacuate until the fire chief showed up and cleared the building(s), making sure there was no danger.

I've managed to set one off myself by just doing routine maintenance and bumping a dirty air filter, releasing dust. Dust, being a particulate, would be picked up by the VESDA system and sound the alarm.

Kind of a pain.

Glad to hear that no beer was damaged!

Gahr to Fireman "Hey can I please go back inside so I can finish my beer?"
Policeman to Gahr "Just how much have you had to drink today, Sir?"

Glad to hear a minimum of property loss and no loss of life.

IS that the BEER CAR in the foreground of the last pic?????
Well spotted, sir! That’s the car used by our local sales manager. We’ve got four cars in all. Two different size delivery vans, and the two sales reps have a car each; our girl in Bergen has the small «egg» in the pic, and our guy in Oslo has a small van. We’re running a pretty small operation...

Well, actually it went more like this:

Cop to Gahr: «I really hope you are not ruining one of your lovely IPAs because of this?»
Fireman to Gahr: «When we saw it was the brewery, we really hurried up! What are you brewing?»
Gahr to cop and fireman: «We are brewing a pale ale today. By the way, I have to add some hops to the boil, is it ok if I go back inside? There’s no smoke downstairs.»
Cop: «The fireman has to answer that one, I guess.»
Fireman: «Yeah, go ahead.»
Gahr walks back into the brewery to finish the brew.

Sorry to be a stickler, but VESDA are air sampling smoke detection units. It consists of a system of piping with air sampling ports along it.
A fan draws air through the piping to a control and smoke sensing unit.

There are also beam type smoke detectors that "see" whether the beam is clear or obstructed (thus scattering a percentage of the light beam) by air borne particles typical of combustion. Dust can look like smoke, so nuisance alarms are not uncommon with either system, as well as typical spot type individual smoke detectors.

Yes, spot on about the VESDA. They do have a little laser inside the head unit that draws the air through the piping, and relays that information to a larger monitoring system. Other nuisance alarms we'd often get were things like "high flow" (which was usually just a loose joint along the piping system) or other things sometimes related to the small filter inside the sensing unit.

That's a fairly large response, but hey - I imagine they were just trying to make sure they're favorite local brew was safe...

Can I have a sales position in Norway? I'll try to get by with speaking German, and will do my best at learning Norwegian.

Seriously, I'm happy to hear that the fire brigade did not have to spray the place, and cause a ton of water damage as a result. Hope everything is back to normal quickly.

I guess they responded like they did since we are situated in the middle of a residencial area and we have highly flamable stuff in the brewery (50 kg bottles of pure oxygen and 200 liter drums of peracetic acid), and because our next door neighbors are a kindergarden and a primary school. They came from no less than three differen fire stations...

^ It's a professional and sensible response by a well functional local lauthority. Impressive.

In England, you would have had a volunteer fireman attending the scene within 48 hours...
