EVs

Omg. I do not like EV’s , I’ll explain.
So I had a flight , we picked the mystery vehicle. No mystery, EV. They call it a Mustang 4x, not even close.

The car is ok, the problem is charging it.
I drove from the airport to my daughter’s house. I then went to my destination.
The rental company told me it needs to charged to 88% when I return it. It was at 88% when I picked it up.

So the next day , I searched the net for a local charging station there was 1.
I went there and finally figured out it doesn’t need the cumbersome app to pay.
There are 2 stations and a sign is posted that said 4 hr. Parking. Code enforced.

Guess what, that hunk of junk was not fully charged in 4 hrs. So I took it to the house and brought it back for another charging session.
5 hrs. more of charging got me 100%
Next day, I drive to the airport. It was at about 83%.
I will never ever get another EV

There are quick charging stations, (1 hour charging) they require 3X 100 amp panels. (according to the Tesla instructions)
That's 3X more power than any average house has installed.
Not that I dislike the idea of electric vehicles.............being an electrician................I realize there are a few kinks in the system.

For one, the power grid we have can't possibly deliver enough power to quick charge a nation full of electric cars.
It would have to be tripled in size and capacity.

Second, where the power comes from - burning of fossil fuels - nuclear power plants ...
neither of which is environmentally responsible.

Unlike Canada, we do not have substantial hydroelectric generation....which is far more practical and responsible.

Third, between the power plant and the vehicle.......63% of the power generated, is being lost in transmission.
The power grid we have is 37% efficient.
This, according to the California Public Utilities Commission.
We will need to build 1.5 new power plants per year, just to keep pace with the current growth of demand.

Considering all the above factors, (remember I am an electrician) the 100% electric future "plan," is substantially flawed.
It's environmentally flawed....
It's capacity deficient flawed.....
And, the people who created this plan assumed that electricity was 100% efficient, which it's not (even close to).
I am sorry to remind you, this "plan" falls flat on it's face....there's no way for it to work.

Yes....reality is a bitch.

I will never never buy an electric Suv, Truck or car.. Junk you say? correct in my book. There are people trading them back in for gas. Goodluck on your trade in value. it'll be worthless.

Boys and girls. I think this horse is dead. Between this thread and the dozen other threads discussing EV's, no one has brought forth any new info. The Pro camp is still pro and the Con camp is still Con. It's always the same arguments. And to be honest. The rest of us that are fence riders really don't care anymore. I respectfully suggest that it's way past time to put this subject out to pasture.

I respectfully suggest that as long as the postings on this or any other subjects remain respectful, these threads should be allowed to continue. True, that this is a “hot” topic and has the possibility of getting out of hand, but that goes for just about any other topic. TTR has a unique group of contributing members and vibe, and from my experience here through the years, I’ve seen members do some self-policing before the moderators or the Grand Puba himself has to lay down the law.

And since it’s been revealed that the cost of minting one penny is 3.69 cents, I have just offered my 7.38 cents worth!

I get that and don't disagree. This place has pretty much always been self policing. My comment was not made as a moderator, just my 2 cents worth on we've beat this subject to death. That was all. And as suggested, I'm allowed to voice that opinion. And I did it without offering a political innuendo.

Besides.... as a child of the 70s, I'm a firm believer in free speech. It's not just about Social Media discussions that never end...... it's face to face with someone that just keeps going in circles. Repeating the same argument every third sentence...... and won't let it go. That ones driven me up the theoretical tree for as long as I can remember.

And with that. I step off my soap box. :victoire:

This is my idea of electric vehicles. :rolf:

Oh man.... do I concur on this one. Still have some HO track in the house. Just no cars or controllers. Maybe no transformer. Early 70s when slot cars were the rage.... to the point there was a pro circuit, I had a 1/24 scale little Can Am hot rod. Ran it on a track once or twice. It was a blast.

Mine was a different body. McLaren CanAm if I remember, but a very similar chassis.

I had not seen any other post about EV’s.
I had no idea it was an exhausted topic here.
That was my experience, I thought maybe others had similar.
Moving on.

It’s been a topic of discussion that’s been periodically popping up for a year or so. Sometimes in a stand alone thread. Sometimes in the middle of a thread with no relevance….. you know how we like to derail threads here.

If I live long enough to buy another car, it will be an EV. I liked my son’s Teslas, but since he recently decided he didn’t like them anymore, he got rid of his last one and replaced it with a Porsche Taycan, which is incredible.

Well
if you create all the electricity you need from non-fuel sources...
(like Canada has been doing)
then things can change.

Remember it was not all that long ago that Nicola Tesla / New York generated all electricity from Niagara Falls.
