EVH Tribute

Sorry for the double photo post there!

After the tape striping was applied, areas of wear were masked off using kids Crayola Washable Glue. This is a technique I saw posted by a well known YT guy named Johnny B Guitars. He is a fellow Canuck and resident online Van Halen fan and Frankenstein historian. In fact he received kudos for his very detailed research in the latest issue (Oct 2021) of Guitar World magazine in an article on the origins of Eddie's Franky. I have to give props to Johnny Burgess for his videos on the subject.

Here is a tease of the other bits:

TROUBLE LOADING PICS RIGHT NOW! Please standby!

The bridge is a real '80's Floyd Rose with honest-to-goodness real world relicing. I also have period correct '80's West German made Schaller tuners. The pickup is a brand new '78 from Jalen Pickups in the US of A. It certainly looks the part and the YT sound clips show lots of promise! The neck pickup in the real Franky is non-functional but I have obtained the very last "Replicator" pickup from John Williams. It is a functional single coil and should make the guitar a bit more versatile. Aesthetically it will be correct but the volume ("tone") knob will be on a push-pull to allow switching between neck and bridge pickups.

Well, folks, you can see from the last post that it has been 2 years since this project was worked on! WTF! :)

Anyway, I have started moving forward again and have some more photos to tease y’all with! The relicing of the white/black version is complete (I think) and we are preparing now to start the arduous task of getting all of the tape on for the red coat to be applied. This is where we find out if the taping for the white coat was accurate enough to allow the red coat and stripes to line up correctly. Red is Duplicolor Toyota Super Red II, as it’s the colour of choice for most Frankie builds and the red I used on my first build.

In post #102 I mentioned Johnny Burgess and his YT channel Johnny B Guitars. His obsessively in depth research into Eddie’s Frankenstein was second to none! He was even asked to build a Frankie inspired SG for none other than Phil X, now of Bon Jovi fame!

Unfortunately, it would seem that the publicity garnered from his Guitar World interview brought his YT channel to the attention of EVH/Fender MIC. He has been ordered to cease and desist all content related to the Frankenstrat and was ordered to take it down.

We have lost a considerable resource of both historical information and photo documentation of how the Frankie evolved and how it was physically created. What a crying shame!
