EVH Phase90

I bought an EVH Phase90 pedal used online.

I didnt really get to mess with it too much last night because it was late.
I did plug it into the FX loop at low volumes (it was really late) and played.

The pedal seemed to be giving me more of a volume fade in and out than a warble type effect. I'm now wondering if there is something wrong with the pedal or am I doing something wrong

Lets not pass out the congratulations just yet.
I hope there is nothing wrong with this pedal. I'm going to try it in different positions of the signal chain first as @Thatbastarddon recommended.
If it still has that volume in and out fade issue, I will be returning it.

I placed the Phase90 out in front of the amp. After my OD. It is GLORIOUS!!!
Then I started messing with my other modulation effects. My chorus still sounds good where it is, the Flanger sounds better in front. My other phaser also sounds a hair better out front.

Thank you @Thatbastarddon for the suggestion.

Happy to help!
Phaser and flanger are weird like that. Some people even like chorus out front…I’m not one of those.
My Small Stone, placed after a treble booster, but before a homebrew muff variant, with a slap back delay at the end, into an 18watt Marshall-esque amp set near break up, copped a pretty decent “Spirit of Radio” tone.
A bit hairy, but decent.
Vibes can be weird to place in a chain too.

Try it out front too…before dirt pedals, and after…hopefully, you’ll find a sweet spot for you. I find that I like it before my dirt-boxes…especially for some Rush/Lifeson vibe. YMMV.
Agreed. I have an ancient script 90. I don't use it much anymore, but when it do it's first in the chain (after tuner). Phase 90s are pretty mild and all you have is the speed control. But they definitely add a nice flavor.

I must have spent a few hours tinkering with pedal placement last night.
First time I really messed with my board like that in a while.
The Source Audio Lunar phaser I have was always in the loop and I never liked it. Now that I have it out front it sounds amazing. I did an A B between the lunar and the phase90 and I can get the lunar close to the MXR. But then I can do so much more with the lunar because I can mess with the not only the speed but the depth and shape of the LFO wave.

I’ve been in this 80s hair band mood lately and I wanted to get those flanger, chorus, phaser tones.
The Lunar, Phase90, and Vortex flanger all sound better up front.
The Corona chorus I like in the loop.
I think I’ll keep both phasers on the board since I can get such distinctly different flavors out of them. The chorus stays where it is. The flanger I’ll switch in and out with either of the phasers when the mood strikes. Or I’ll make room for it and keep it there.
Tonight I’m going to fiddle around with more placement options of these pedals. I feel like a kid playing around with a train set.

I feel like I should document and report what happens to these effects as I move them around the chain.
Doing a YT video would be boring AF to watch. I’m sure there are a ton of people out there who have gone through this exact same thing.

One thing I will say. The EVH with the knob set at around 9 or 10 o’clock in script mode sounds creamier than the block mode which sounds more aggressive. It’s almost as if the block mode advances the dial to the 12 or 1 o’clock position of the script mode.

Yeah, there is a huge variation from model to model and year to year for the Phase 90s. The sweet spot on my old script is 11:00 o'clock but it's also so old now that I have semi retired it. Back in the late 70s, early 80s, I also had one of the MXR grey box flangers with the AC cord attached, and that thing was so nice. It had the warmest, most mellow flanging swoop.
