EVH 5150 III 50W any good?

Never played one, but I'd think you may like them.
6L6 or EL34?
EL34. I think I may like it, too. In my head it's a done deal if it's still there tomorrow. I'm already getting some stuff together to trade in, i.e. get rid of and out of my way. I just thought I'd ask and see if someone says "No, it's not one of the good ones" before I do the deed.

I guess what I'm wondering is if it sounds good at low volume, if the clean channel is good with fuzz, and if the loop is good? It will replace my SC20.

Try it out at GC. Plug it in and let it rip

In the vid Fitz posted (listening through my stereo) the differences are subtle, but it seems like the 6L6 version is a little livelier. I don't know, from what I've read (in a search) by guys on other forums they say the EL84 Blue Channel isn't as good on the EL34 version. They also say the EL34 version is darker because it has more lower mids and the high gain is fizzy. I like a darker amp so I don't know if it'll matter to me, but I don't like fizzy. I'll have to try it.

I've still been looking for info and opinions on the EL34 version and it seems no one likes the Blue channel on it. But read this post on a forum that came up in my search and this is encouraging...

"So I did a couple of mods to the 5150 III recently that really make the amp quite a bit better. First off, I have yet to hear anyone that likes the stock blue channel on this amp, which is an absolute shame because all the other 5150 III heads have an amazing blue channel. It's come to light more and more over the past year or so that simply snipping out a small capacitor fixes this.

This is the easiest mod you can make to this amp and it totally kills. Just snip out capacitor 137 and the blue channel comes to life, making it just as great as the blue channel on the other 5150 III amps."

...and then several guys that tried the mod after his post all had positive things to say.

Now I'm stoked again. Looks like I'm off to GC tomorrow. :fingersx:
