Electric Bass Dulcimer

My aunt wanted an electric bass lap dulcimer.
A quick google search for her turned up very little info, so she calls me and tells me she want's me to build her one.
Uh, Ok... A what?
So in my typical reckless fashion, I dive headfirst into the unknown.
Gathering bits & pieces of walnut, butternut & oak and pondering on just how I was going to pull this off.
As usual, the wood guided me. And things started to take form.

Started with an idea for the headstock & tail blocks by gluing up oak boards.

Then I cut a pair of 2" wide walnut strips and bent them into the sides and fastened the head & tail blocks together.

So at this point I've figured out roughly how long the thing will be.

And I fit the bottom and glued it up.
That was the easy part so far. Getting everything to fit in the right place on the top will be a trial & error process.

That big hunk of oak that's the tail block got routed out for an area to put the strings through. Also turned out to be a dandy place for the preamp / tuner.

When I was satisfied with where everything was going to go, I started gluing it all together.

Then I got to take it all apart again & finish it.

And put it all back together again.
So now my aunt shall have her bass dulcimer...

Nice work brotha.

Definitely a work of art, to be proud of.

Lot of talent on this forum.
Thanks, there IS a lot of talent around here, in spite of me and my shenanigans.
Every member brings special something to the table here.
Junk rubbing, songcrafters, web designers, great players, skilled builders, amp techs, guitar techs, great cooks, humor, and a strong sense of camaraderie.
This place has it all, and is a constant source of my inspiration.

There's other amps besides Marshall? o_O
Just one that matters. Marshall's & Mesa's in my humble opinion, are the forces that rule the earth...
I have both and love love them equally. Both deliver the goods.
They just grunt differently.
If it doesn't have that saturated, aggressive and singing high gain tone, it's not for me.

you left out JUNK RUBBING ;)
o_O How ignorant of me. Please forgive this glaring oversight.
Of course, The fabled Junk Rub. No instrument feels truly loved without it.

I have amended my post to reflect this.
Thank you for bring this matter to my attention...

I saw that thing the other day in person - it is too freak'n cool. It has very convincing bass sound too. The pictures don't do it justice when it comes to the Cool Factor of that thing...

Wow I hadn't seen this yet...

That's badass!
Me neither, nice work Hack !
Thanks guys.
It was a fun challenge to create something that hadn't really existed before.
And hopefully it'll make it to my aunts place tomorrow before her dulcimer groups practice session @ 1:00

But I must confess, I kinda cheated.
Instead of the usual parts scrounging, I gutted a Ubass for the tuners and electric parts, and built the dulcimer around those.
It made perfect sense, only paying shipping from the one source, and getting everything I needed.
Plus after I priced out the individual parts, it was so close that it was a no brainer.
That way I had the preamp, undersaddle pickup, tuners, and fat poly strings that I knew would all work together.

As a bonus I have this left over...

Anybody want a project???
