DR Color Coated Strings Review

I bought some DR string in green on amazon for my Green crackle explorer I painted. DO NOT buy these things.

First the good.
Out of the box they look great. Neon green which would look cool under some black light ... you guys remember those days I'm sure (or maybe not)
That's it. Thats the good..

Now the bad.
First, the coating flaked off the high E string before I could even finish tuning it. I wasnt even using a pick, just gently plucking with my fingers Mainly because I knew it would flake. But didnt think it would flake off that easy.

Second, They sound like crap. There is no brightness to them, the sustain is cut down and the tone just sounds muted for lack of a better word. I played on crud filled strings that sounded better..

The close up picture below shows what they look like after I tuned it.
I played it for a few minutes and they look worse now.

I would be ok with the flaking if they sounded good, but its really a waste of money.
At least I got a picture out of the deal.
I'm heading to the store today to get a set of regular strings. I really cant stand the way these sound.

Yeah. I just wanted to try something different.
Never again. Go with what you know, especially in this case.

I can second you here, bro. I bought some DR blacks for my Tele that looked brutal but sound like hammered dog . They're still on there and I need to change them.

I bought a set of DR red white and blue strings for my son's guitar and a set of neon multicolor for my daughter's. The neon multicolor are cool for teaching her which strings to place her fingers but beyond that, BOTH suck too.

Never again for me

I concur on that one. There’s no mistaking when it’s time to change. I think I’ve put it off sometimes where the low E actually goes thud when I hit it.

I changed out the strings with 10-52. Tuned it to C#. What a difference!!!
It sounds as mean as it looks now.

I should have done a tone comparison.

10-52s are my personal favorites. I switched from 9s to 10s years ago but then stumbled upon the hybrid 10-52s a couple years back and have used them exclusively now. You still got the 1st to 3rd strings of the 10s for bends but you get that ballsy 4th to 6th section closer to 11/12s nearly, for plenty of low end chunk.

Those strings sound too green, no sustain.
Green has the lowest sustain of any color....
Reminds me of "stay in tune" guitar strings

So are you hypothesizing that either blue or red may have better sustain?

I would think maybe brown strings would. Cause we all know poop is brown and nothing, absolutely nothing lingers ( aka sustains) as much as that can lmao
