Doing a good deed

My dad was always into HO gauge trains. As long as I can remember back, dad always had a train board. After he retired and all the kids had moved out he built a large train board in the finished basement. His longest track was 160 ft.

I built my first N gauge train board in 1978. Built another one around 1994 and set it up and worked on it every year between Thanksgiving and Christmas. I haven’t touched it in 15 years and now after the move I decided to donate it, all the train cars and engines and buildings. Called the local boys and girls club a few days ago and they said they would be excited to have it.

Took the train board and 6 boxes of stuff over yesterday. The gal that runs the place brought her husband so I could explain a lot of the stuff to him. We set it up, sanded the tracks and got 5 engines running. They haven’t moved in 15 years. Felt good leaving it there for kids to learn from and work on.

Love electric trains. My favorite scale is HO. Mom still has this relic in her knick knack cabinet...

That looks like a S gauge, bigger than HO and smaller than O. I had a box with almost that same engine and 6 passenger cars I gave them too.

Trivia - HO stands for Half O.

Here’s the only digital pics of my Dad’s train board, somewhere around 1992. The one pic is my dad and son, the other my nephew. If ya look on the control console you will see the entire layout. I gotta scan some old photos in of the whole layout. After my dad passed, us 7 kids each took a bunch of his trains in his memory. The last pic is a shadow box I have hanging in our “train” room. And that’s no where near 1/7 of the rolling stock and engines my dad had. The trains were his retirement hobby.

That is such a generous gift my friend, I have given a bit of mine away but not as much as your generous offering.
It will definitely change some young ones outlook on things, especially related to railroading in general.
Thanks

My pops used to build HO slot car boards and train boards. @Don O this brought back some geat memories
I’m sure you also ran those slot cars. We are basically the same age. We had a 1/24 scale track in the neighborhood where you could rent time on. They also ran “race” weekends back in the 70s when there was actually a traveling pro circuit. Yes. People paid to race a slot cars. It was crazy how much money those guys had in those cars.

At my local Boys Club there was a track for 1/24 and 1/32 that we could use for free. There was also business that had a track that you could rent time on. I opted for the Boys Club because it was much closer and more affordable.
