I have a new project that I'm planning and need an F style mandolin body.

The neck will be sawed off, so a broken neck mando would be preferred.
Fleaybay sellers want as much as a new one for used and damaged ones, plus those vultures want freight on top of that.
Musicians Friend has a new one on sale for $119

But I so hate to take a chainsaw to a brand new instrument, regardless of how cheap it is.

So if someone has something broken sitting in a closet collecting dust, please let me know.
Otherwise that new Rogue may get ordered & repourposed.
It HAS to be the F style as pictured, with the scroll & points.

It will get turned into an advanced version of this...

I used the pear shaped A style mandolin for this one.
It is a hybrid mandolin dulcimer thingie with an undersaddle piezo and a mag pick up into a concentric volume pot for blending the two signals.
It works great but I've always wished it was the fancier body with the scrolls & points.
So I'm going to make it a mate.

When I show up at an acoustic open mic, I like to play something that raises a few eyebrows and gets people asking questions.
In this pic it only had the undersaddle piezo. I added the magnetic pickup later.

The questions are usually followed by a sale...

Cool idea add two more strings an it's a Bouzoki.

On a F style top you want to tap the top to a F# note that's what LLoyd Loar did.

No you can't have my Morris USA made.

That's beautiful.
Yep, that's the shape I'm looking for, but my top tapping will be on the finest Asian tone plywood I'm afraid.
Used a Rogue body for he last one and it surprised me how good it sounds in it's current state.

Had a Rogue 5 string fretless bass once--- it was SHOCKINGLY good for what it was -- gave it to one of my boys--- its gone now---traded for hookers or blow Im sure -- or....pizza -- or video games -- these damn millenials have no proper sense of greed and gear hoarding

I had someone offer me a 1951 Taylor 2-15 in nice shape (missing pickguard though) for trade. I'd like to do it, but I'd want to keep it not sell it, so... I passed.

Mandolins are cool, but the 6 string Acous-dolin is awesome ;)

Edit - oops - make the a Martin 2-15 mandolin...

Things are progressing.
An unassuming mandolin has been ordered, totally unaware of it's fate in my evil little hands.
With any luck, Fed Ex will break the neck in transit and I can claim a huge discount.

I start the ball rolling by making a neck out of a 1.5" x 1.5" piece of red oak.

It goes thru a few shape shifting exercises to get a rough profile.

A headstock gets roughed in, binding channel gets cut along fingerboard, the fretboard area gets stained and the binding is glued in place. I wanted to do a simple scroll headstock so I set about laying out and carving one. Then when the dust settles, I end up with this...

After some sanding, shot or two of lacquer, a few frets and my way cool bullseye position markers, it's starting to look like a neck.

More to come when the donor F style mandolin victim arrives.

Look neat! Did you do all the headstock carving by hand?
Thanks guys. It's my strange way of relaxing & unwinding.

Sort of by hand John, I lay it out and make cardboard templates till I get something that agrees with me.
Transfer it to the wood, then I attack it with a Dremel.
Grind away a little at a time, till I reach my vision.
I've done a few others. Everyone is a little different.
