There is different ideas on this topic like every topic, my view is, yes i do. I use a graphite pencil in the slots every time i change my strings. I have always done this. If you do what do you use.

Some say there is no need to do it, if you have a bone nut, or have a synthetic nut that is cut properly.

I know bone and synthetic nuts , no need, if the nuts are cut right, but i always use the pencil every string change no matter what.

I used to do the pencil trick years ago, but then since I learned to properly dress a nut I have stopped. No need with a properly cut nut no matter what the material.

One time when my G was sticking on my LP. I ended up having to nailfile it out. Normally I see no purpose on bone.

I intend to and always forget when I change strings. Honestly. Ive not noticed an issue from not lubing it.

I have a parts caster early Fender Custom Shop body the stock neck truss was stripped put a Fender maple neck on it
never sounded good found a real 1960 slab board neck the bone nut was warn out and the frets are on their last leg
I had a 1914 Washburn Ivory nut I have some pre ban Ivory my 2" 72" belt grinder made fast order getting the proper shape
soaking the nut in vinegar made the string slots much faster to cut the only thing is the nut is bright white

The only time I bother to lubricate the nut is on guitars with a non-locking vibrato. On stop-tail guitars, I’ve never had the need. My 2004 Strat has an LSR roller nut. That doesn’t need lube, either,
