Do you consider yourself a guitar player or a musician?

I think I fall into the musician camp. I started on violin when I was seven years old. Played cello for a while. I also play bass, mandolin, dobro, and steel guitar. The entire time I've played in bands, I tried to take the George Harrison approach, and play what's best for the song. Whether it was solos, rhythm parts, guitars and amp combinations, vocal parts, or helping with the writing process. I was always more concerned with the overall sound instead of defining "my" sound. That will happen anyway as an end result, and people will pick up on something that defines my playing.

Even when I played mandolin in a Celtic band. The violinist and I ended up doing more of the arranging and directing everyones' parts, even though we were not the primary people in the band. We were able to sometimes see through the mess of seven people playing, and make the appropriate suggestions to make the band and the songs sound their best.
