DIY Transfer Image to a Guitar with Lacquer Clear Coat (anyone doing or has done?)

So, I got this idea I want to transfer a picture to a guitar that has a lacquer finish. I want to clear coat with lacquer. There seems be a wealth of info out there with DIY acrylic, mod-podge, diy acrylic water-slide decals, etc, but not much on DIY lacquer image transfer/decals.

So, imagine you have a lacquer finished guitar that you want to make yours by putting, say your favorite super hero (or what ever image) on it and want to use lacquer clear coat. Have you done it with success, are you doing it now, anyone ever wanted to, or maybe still wants to do this? No big hurry, as I'm not doing it unless I'm pretty sure I can get'er'done correctly the first time ;)

ive not done it on a guitar but me and my girlfriend do craft projects to sell and ive put a light coat of poly on boards.Just enough for the cut out vinyl letters to stick to boards.there was is sticky on the back of these letters by the way.then gal friend mod podged over it.then i took and sprayed poly over this .worked likeba charm.so ya it will work

I've never done it, but a few thoughts come to mind...

Lacquer usually goes on in very thin coats, so you may find that you need quite a few coats to completely smooth out the edges of the image you want to apply.

Lacquer has some fairly strong solvents in it. You may want to do a test piece on a scrap of wood to be sure the lacquer won't damage the ink or coloring of the image.

I know with water slide decals, after the image is printed , that you need to spray some clear acrylic on it before you dip it in the water. I wonder if the acrylic would protect the image from laquer?

Smillys correct in the fact that if you might have to put several layers of Poly on as to not feel the image or what ever your spraying over.depends on how thick this image out
