Dirty Deeds - A Quick & Dirty Cover:

So...

The idea behind this song was to step way from my usual tendency to over-produce everything. All instruments were recorded in a single take. Good or bad, that's what made it to the recording. The only post-recording mixing was limited to a volume reduction of 2db behind the guitar solo and reverb was added to one channel of the lead vocal and one channel of the guitar solo.

My drummer friend and colleague laid down the drum tracks and the song was built around that.

A $60.00 Ibanez import bass (with Ernie ball .105's) was played through a Fender Rumble 40 XLR direct-out to my DAW.

Two separate rhythm guitar tracks were recorded and panned left and right respectively.

I sang two tracks of backing vocals after the fact and again, everything was restricted to being completed in a single take, good or bad.

On the solo, I listened to the record a couple of times, jammed along to the solo once, then recorded it. If it sucks, then it sucks, but that's what made it onto the recording. I am sure Angus would want to punch me in the mouth for disgracing his solo, but it's a very real and genuine approach, without resorting to multiple takes, double tracking and other studio tricks...

(Waiting for the 32 bit float WAV to upload...)

I wanted to capture some of the classic AC/DC vibe, but come across with my own unique, signature guitar tone and picking technique. My 50 Watt Marshall and 2x12 cabinet were used. A single microphone was placed about 6 feet from the cabinet in the middle of the room and just pointed in the general direction without any searching for a mystical 'sweet spot' for microphone placement. Recording was done with master volume on '7' and my headphones were used to both dampen the sound and help manage the volume levels. inside the room....
