I snagged a broken DBX 166 compressor for a couple of tenners the other day. Broken in this case was a big question mark, there were two knobs missing off the front and "something about the meter on channel #2".

The mains flex was a mess of tape insulating exposed wires where the sleeve had been sheered off, a terminal block in the middle, etc. They creatively used yellow tape - nice touch, a bright colour to warn you. Unfortunately, I doubt that was the rationale behind it. Anyway, off that came, together with the wirenuts connecting the mains lead to the transformer primaries. Like most DBX compressors of this type it's always on, no power switch.

The transformer and so on seem OK, though I gave the electrolytics a hard stare. They don't appear to have failed yet (entirely) and feed a pair of 7815/7915 voltage regulators. The positive side reads about 14.8V, the negative side read about 8V, so something it/was off there. I disconnected the output of the negative supply from the rest of the circuit, but that wasn't dragging it down. Ripple on the supply lines looks pretty OK without any signal loading things down. I intend to replace the caps later on anyway, for now they'll suffice. After probing about a bit I found that the -15V rail had climbed/jumped to -14.8V, matching the positive side. Hmmm... wiggled and poke everything... couldn't reproduce the fault. Touched up the solder joints on the regulator, checked the little film caps across the rectifier.. all fine. My guess is that a cap in the negative section of the power supply was struggling and a little juice and warmth brought it back to life. I don't trust the LM7915, though but I also don't have a spare strangely enough (!).

The pots for the 2nd channel output gain and peak threshold are destroyed anyway, they got forced into the chassis, snapping the wafer of the pot. They're also unmarked. Found a schematic, but the photocopier must have been on its last legs and while I've found that one is a 20K linear pot, the other is "6K7 log". What, a 6K7? Yup. I removed the broken pots and cracked them open to measure the carbon track - 20 and 6.7K. Well, that's going to be fun to track down.

Apart from that the whole unit is basically just a lot of LM339 DIL's, TL072's and a couple of 4558 opamps. The switches were dirty but after a little cleaning all working again.

I'll drop some pics here when I've received the replacement pots and parts. Nothing else looks fried and channel #1 is "OK", channel two is a bit hard to evaluate with controls missing.
 
Well, I promised pics...

Here are the unobtanium pots. Apparently, they're ALPS, but haven't been manufactured since the late 80's. DBX didn't use them for the follow-up models of the 166 (A, XL), neither do they have any stock left. I didn't actually ask them, someone else did years ago according to a forum post that I stumbled upon. Mounting regular pots to the front panel would be an option, but I'd prefer to avoid going that route because it would most likely entail enlarging the holes and obviously running wires to the board. Another option is to replace the wafer and track in the existing pots - the wiper/shaft assemblies don't appear damaged in either case.

Oh, more joy; one of the pots is a 6K7. Later models replaced that with a more standard 5K. I'm not sure if a resistor change elsewhere is needed for the swap but I have the schematic (also thanks to Jon for pointing me to it). We'll see. For now... this is where we are:

Yes, the caps in the power supply are getting shotgunned. Both the film caps (barely visible near the rectifier diodes) and the electrolytics. At least the 7915 regulator is going to be replaced as it seems to be misbehaving and putting out about 8V sometimes without any current draw and no significant ripple on the 24V supply line.

The unit must have taken a considerable wallop on the right hand side of the front panel. This broke the wafers in two pots and those two knobs are missing. I do have the plastic 'guide inserts' for the holes, though and one of the 'knob inserts'. If I can replace the wafer and track, we're back in business.

The rest shouldn't really be a problem. I have the service manual for calibration IF it's actually required. I've ordered some spares for various parts that I was short on anyway; LM339's, TL072's, NE5532's to drop the noisefloor of the 4558's in there if need be. Also missing; the screw-on inserts for the jacks on the back. I have a few and otherwise it would be easy enough to replace those, even if this original type is unobtanium like the pots.

Unless there's some thermal type in the transformer, the unit also has NO fuse. I might retroactively fit one of the rear panel, not sure yet.

Note the subtle difference in pitch. 4.3mm spacing... Those could actually be coerced into fitting if push comes to shove.
 
Thanks, Jon, if you happen to have something suitable I'd be much obliged... I measured the wafer on another pot but the track size on these ALPS is smaller - the track on the other wafer would be shorted by the shell if I ground it to size. I could remove some of the carbon track, but at that point I'd be tempted to look at alternatives.
