Custom Mahogany 2X12 Cabinet Speaker Choices:

Ok!!!!

So tonight I weighed the mahogany 2x12 cabinet - which was supposed to weigh about 30 pounds - and I was thrilled to find it weighed only 26 pounds!!!!

If I use the 4.4 pound Jensen Jet Tornado Neodymium 100W (I already have) and pair it with the 5.2 pound Jensen MOD12-70 Ceramic, the completed 2x12 cabinet will only weigh 35 pounds.

Man, I am stoked!!!

Is it better to use a pair of identical speakers in a 2x12???
Is it better?...nope, not necessarily.....
Better than what though?
It‘s an opinion/taste thing. Something that can’t be decided upon until it is experienced.
How is that specialty mahogany cab going to behave with any particular speakers, or combination of speakers? It’s not like you’re loading a cab that many people have experience working with.(you’re not loading up a 1960a, or b, or an Orange 2x12, or Mesa Recto)
Best of luck.

True, and I am really not well versed at all when it comes to speakers. I try to put a lot of thought into these kind of things. At $160.00 (Neo Creamback) to $259.00 (Jensen N12K) a pop, gambling becomes an expensive hobby quickly.

I think my original question should be rephrased.

Many say two different voiced speakers give a type of 'harmonized' effect to the ear. However, I think that could pose some problems when miking a cabinet, because you will have to mike both speakers to garner that same effect. Additionally, when running different speakers, your EQ may end up being a compromise between the two speakers. I was just pondering those issues this morning. We started work at 4am so i can get out of here early.

I'm sold on the neodymium-style speakers for this cabinet project. Can you believe...a complete and finished 2X12 weighing only 34 pounds??? My bandmate's 1x12 weighs that much and will not fit into my trunk, so I feel good about the direction I am going. I even considered a lightweight jensen MOD12-70 ceramic (only 5.2 pounds) but thought maybe it's better to just go 100% Neo on this rig.

I've been picking up this 60 pound DSL40C, turning it sideways and laying it flat on it's back in my trunk - twice a day sometimes - for the past couple of years, and let me tell you, I haven't been so excited about new gear in a very, very long time. For me, everything has to revolve around function.

Here's the speaker that I currently have on hand that is already installed in the new mahogany 2x12 cabinet:

12" Jensen Jet Tornado Classic 100watt

I have considered just buying another Jensen Jet Tornado Classic Neodymium 100 watt, and I have even considered the Jensen 100 watt Stealth Tornado and the "Fender Replacement" Jensen 100 watt N12K, but haven't really heard them. The description of how they sound can be a very subjective thing indeed.

12" Jensen Stealth 100 watt Tornado

12" Jensen N12K Neodymium 100watt

So, yes...I am definitely in uncharted waters and, quite frankly, it's a little intimidating doing this on such a strict budget.

Please accept my apologies for all the questions. I wish I really did understand this better and/or had a much more generous gear budget... :-)

Correct in the tonal experience while standing in the room with the cab.
Regarding problematic mic situation: it depends on the application. Live mic(for PA reinforcement) - choose the speaker you like best, if you have to. This presumes the live situation prohibits the cab from being heard above/with the rest of the band and PA...and that is not a situation that you have ever described being in. You have written often that your band’s PA is used predominantly for vocal duties.
Recording - multiple mic’s are commonly used, including “room” mic’s for just that type of capture(if the “room” permits)

Appreciate the reply. I am always learning, refining and questioning.

Ok,

I just ordered my second speaker from Amplified parts in Arizona.

Here's what I am gonna be running in the 2x12 cabinet:

12" Tornado Classic 100 | Jensen Loudspeakers

12" Tornado Stealth 100 | Jensen Loudspeakers

Both are rated at 100watts

Both are 16 ohms

Both are Neodymium and weigh only 4.5 pounds.

Both have a 97db sensitivity rating

Both will be wired parallel.

let's hope they can take the beating of heavy resonance...
Good people to do bidnizz with.

I have visited their store many times, it's so "old school" cool!

I think those speakers will handle the resonance just fine. I also believe you will be hearing the "true" sound of the Origin, no speaker flub with those specs.

Congratulations on the new tone tools, can't wait to hear what you can do with them! You might have something with the idea of not having speaker cone breakup as part of the sound, should be interesting indeed.

Update:

This just in...

Bradley Woodbury at Amplified Parts and I spoke about this setup a few minutes ago. After discussing the rig, he recommended that we alter the speaker choice and go with the 80 watt Jensen Jet Tornado Stealth. Brad felt like it would balance well with the 100 watt Tornado Classisc as the 80 watt places tonal emphasis on the opposite end of the spectrum from the 100 watt and it's actually 1db louder.

Speaker shipping out as we speak....

12" Tornado Stealth 80 | Jensen Loudspeakers

Cha-Cha-Cha-Changes!!!!!

HAHA I was reading Robert's latest quest for tone but in the " NOT SO HEAVY" metal cofig of a lighter Rig.

Hearing the talk of 2 12 inch speakers in a cab, and adding the weights of cab, weights of various speakers, Stereo vs Mono wiring, and so on and so On, I had a thought, What about a Single 15 such as Steve Ray used in his Vibroverb?

Now I digress, As I was checking out various sound clips, I also decided to check out my very first Led Zep album.I definitely hear some tone ol Robert surely can achieve. Jimmy on Custard PIE is to die for!!!!

Never mind that I think Bonzo has to put out the most Bonzo like Drumming ever caught on tape, on this song. Freakiing CUSTARD PIE baby.

Nice!!!!!

My completed 2x12 with speakers and wiring weighs only 35 pounds - 26 pound empty cabinet and (2) 4.4 pound Jensen Neodymium's.

I am toying with the idea of perhaps adding a light 1x12 cabinet and dropping my WGS REAPER 55HZ in it for larger events...but your idea has merit!!!!

MAN has it been too long since I took a hit off the Zep needle.
Like a double barrel shotgun, Custard Pie is followed up by The Rover.
Robert, I know you are the guitar playing equivalent to the Swiss army knife combined with Lazerlike focus in your ears and fingers. BUt I also read you mention drums. Do yourself a favor and give this a listen with headphones and check out Bonham's drumming here. Pure POWER but with groove unlike anyone before or since. Something about that 26 inch kick drum, his footwork and just his timing and feel to drive the rest of the band is what I notice most.

My favorite Led Zeppelin album by a wide margin, It's got everything, every nuance of their sound. Side three is pretty much the greatest 23 minutes of music they ever recorded.

Robert, thanks., Immigrant song was THE first Led Zep song I ever heard as a kid. I had to ask myself or buddies, who was THAT?

Believe it or not Physical Graffiti had to grow on me, but once it did, I was hooked on that album and the genius of Zep.
My next album I got into from them was Houses Of The Holy.

Where is that confounded bridge?

I wasn't into Zeppelin back in the day, but I've been getting into them more and more of late!!!

I was thrilled to perform on "Immigrant Song" and very happy to share my version with you...
