Creating The Band's Rehearsal Tracks:

So, with three guitarist's, it becomes necessary to ensure that each is playing their own part, and quite often, the 3rd guitar rhythm parts have to be arranged because they may not exist in the original song. A lot of times, I notice that we are all playing the same thing in the same register and to my ears, this sounds muddy and undefined. So, one of my jobs in the band is to arrange the parts so each member has a practice track to rehearse with during the week. I start each song with a drum track created by my session colleague and then build the song track-by-track from there.

On Judas Priest's "You've Got Another Thing Comin," I played two rhythm parts - one using full chords and one using just dyads, panning them both left and right so they stand out. I left the chunky and repetitive F# rhythm off of this version (Mike's job) and sent it out to the band. I tracked the bass on my Ibanez import through my fender Runble 20 - XLR X 1/4" direct out into the multiplexer/interface. Guitar used was my 'Project 59' Les Paul direct into my dedicated Blackstar ID-Core 100 with only on board effects used. No effects were added during mixdown on the rhythm parts.

I leave solos up to Todd, our lead guitarist, but I always make sure I know all the solos, because he did jump off a drum riser once and yanked his chord out of his guitar, so I took over on solo duties until he got reconnected. In general, Todd is a wild, furious soloist. He plays with incredible speed and aggression through an ominous Carvin Full Stack. I am more laid back and melodic I think, so my solos probably don't pack the same energy. For this solo, I doubled it, playing the first part on the neck pickup, then switching to the bridge pickup for the second take. A 440m/s delay with 3 repeats was added to the neck pickup solo part and only reverb was added to the bridge pickup's solo part.

It's actually a very fun song to play, so I have created a Dropbox link here for you guys.
