Compression

From a RECORDING perspective.Kinda been a theme lately. Never payed much attention to it before. Then last year went into studio after a hiatus from 1st accident, My sound guy took my board, We went over to the computer & he showed me a graph,,then we set the DSL up strait into Classic side..he only had my gain on 3...i was like this will never ..work. Holy crap on the graph & in the headphones. He said next song..bring your plexi. From then on its been all older circuits with the Fenders & Marshalls

This is not negative on any gear., just observations of what i had on hand. If i am going heavy DSL always for me. But think i learned something..my technique sucked..i was covering it up with gain & noise. That day i went home & played for days..at lower gain & man was i sloppy..but as i worked harder..the chords came out & something opened in me...a melody line..for songwriting...it made such a big platform for a singer.maybe aging..the music is calming but even on our last drop C song..the gain was so down..I heard the bigness open up & the fizz go down.

The compression in the recordings...led me to look at my technique...even going from wav to mp3 to a platform like soundcloud..it piles up & deteriorates that super thick tone that originally was captured..the master copy vs what is in the end really is noticeable;e.. almost recording now ,a lil less gain on purpose..even tho it sounds weak at first to the ears...cause i know the recording process & hosting platforms will further deteriorate the original recording. Compress it & change what that strike on the strings actually was. I am going to pay more attention to the sound guy this tuesday. BastardDon asked me about the pre amps...really has me thinking..that stuff i ignore..really makes a dif...i know my guy shoots for as little extra stuff as possible,,but inevitable with all the tracks..something has to give,,he did drill in me..less is more...hit right..pick right..catch your strings...getting that guitar into amp then on to final product with as little of compression as possible really does matter.

quick read...smitty post nailed it for me...also i was kinda hinting at the deterioration of master to a hosting platform..man on Superficial we did last week..the wav from studio to soundcloud...man it took some goodness away

Well after Smitty's explanation in the other thread I took 30 minutes--- plugged the JOYO ULTIMATE DRIVE into the Mesa -- CLEAN channel and did an "A/B" with the dirt and countour and clean + Joyo -- and -- o.k. -- WOW -- Im starting to get it --
same amp and I was able to basically set the same overal settings between the 2 amp channels-- then flip back and forth ---- totally different tones-- neither rteally better or worse -- just "different" --- shite--
well loks like I need to dig that orange thing you put in the box out and dick around some more with it...........Im ....intrigued for sure

Yeah. You’re not trying to make the pedal “be” your sound. You want the amp to be your sound. The pedal is just there to give it some extra zing.

When it comes to OD and distortion, I’m a bit old-fashioned. I want those driven tones to come from angry tubes!

But, sometimes the pedal can “persuade” the tubes appropriately

I too have been on this quest
I am still going down on the gain.
(no pun intended) but like you
BFT it comes off better in the recording (but I am only recording with my phone) but yet I can hear the difference.
I will continue to back off the gain,
till I hear what I am after.
My live tone will still be as I am playing now, but no more boost on the origin’s.
(the amps boost) but I have to get the swelling down in my left knee to be able to put something up for you all to hear01981338-BDEF-48BD-9D2E-276B90E2A196.jpeg

sexy. ;)

WTF is in your knee!?!?!?!?
I have no idea, on Friday it was hard to bend it, Saturday I left work early ( was difficult to walk) Sunday impossible to walk, and today it’s still a bietch, did nothing to it just a come and go type of annoyance, but this has been the absolute worst it has ever been!
Cheers Mitch
