Companion Guitar in 24.75" Scale:

Great video Robert.

As you know, I completely shielded my 2017 Les Paul Classic. What you didn't know, is that it did the exact same thing you demonstrated. That was good for me to see. If I touched my guitar anywhere, like you, it would stop. Only difference, mine didn't have a pcb. I figured ground. I rewired the entire guitar three times. I finally shielded every spec of cavity. Problem solved.

And, that was the best argument for tone wood I've seen. The six pickups carry the tone from the unplugged 12. Hard to argue that fact...just a matter of how much.

Von Herndon 11# monster!!! Had me cracking up rite there fella :)

Wonder if I could shield it like you did but keep the PCB????

Ahh, I see. I would think you could rig that. At least you could get some shielded. It sucks that it needs to be done. I know this....But, in the scheme of things, it's easy, you've done it, and you'll have a bad ass axe when your done.

Or, if you don't like the neck, as Adrian would say, send it to me. :)..heck I'll pay the freight. :):) Rock it bro!!

Neck isn't bad, just different. I loved the neck on my 50's Tribute but that open grain, flat black and scalloped fretboard were dealbreakers....

Robert, when you get around to it, take me some side view pics of the neck, and then some pics of the control cavities and pup routs.
Curious to see the PCB and what Gib thinks is good enough to have noisy guitars ship as good.

Will do!

I will say that finish, intonation and setup are phenomenal on this guitar. I don't like lacquer, but its what came on this model and it looks nice.

The fret ends have that rounded off profile...very smooth.

Also Robert, while not Les Paul guitars, both Tipton and Downing are playing Gibs. I suspect they didn't have hum issues, and I suspect their tone has plenty of gain and yet is very clear pick attack string definition etc like here in Victim of Changes

@chilipeppermaniac - I've had 4 brand new Gibson guitars and all hummed like this one. My 2003 SG Standard had wiring and it buzzed. All the others had PCB's and they buzzed too.

It's funny when a rep tells you, oh, it's a cable or your amp, etc., and you pull out a second guitar that is dead quiet on his equipment and your new Gibson buzzes like mad.

I fixed the 2016 Gibson SG, which I regret now, because it made me hate that guitar. However, with full shielding and the PCB gone it was almost - ALMOST - totally buzz free. When I got rid of the Gibson pickups, the guitar went dead quiet.

Now here's the thing. I'm big on honesty, so when I sold all my Gibson stuff - 4 sets of Gibson pickups and a complete PCB setup - I marketed them on Reverb: "Noisy take outs from a New Gibson. Noisy Gibson pickups - Brand new."

I also told the buyer this in the interest of honesty. He told me, "Oh, yeah. The Gibson stuff always buzzes like a hive of bees, but its worth it to get that Gibson tone."

So my evaluation standard is different. For most, a buzzing or squealing pickup is acceptable - look at the vintage Fender guys - and I have worked in the studio where the engineer had a guitarist with a Fender walk around until he found the quietest place to play. SCREW THAT.

I like to be able to take my hands off a guitar, to turn a piece of sheet music for example, and not hear buzzing, and not have the guitar crackle and pop as you shift it across your body.

That's my evaluation standard.

In most recordings you will hear buzz and hum. Its generally lost once the music kicks in.

Listen to the line noise on "Welcome to the Jungle."

You really want to hear a noisy rig??? Listen to the beginning of "Miracle Man" by Ozzy. At the start of the song, you hear Zakk's channel open for a split second before the guitar starts.

Tell me this...have you ever heard people talking in the control room on a track??? I've heard more than one song where people's voices come through the mix, like because of a room mic was used.

This just jumps out at me when I listen to a song...

You've proven that Gibson needs shielding. The Norlin-era Gibson's had it...so now its no longer needed????

Hmmmm....
