I don't know that I'd say Gibson tore Ibanez to pieces. They did sue Ibanez in 1977 (the suit was actually Norlin vs. Hoshino), but the suit was settled out of court. The lawsuit was actually over the headstock design Ibanez was using, not the shape of the guitar, itself.
After the lawsuit, Ibanez did discontinue copying other guitar designs, but that's not really what the lawsuit was about. They probably did that just to avoid any future legal entanglements.
