Censorship Nazi's

Well, I was over on ETSG and saw an old member friend.

I PM'd him to ask how he was and what he has been up to. Also sent him a link to here only to have him tell me this AM that it was ******'d out in my PM

It seems like the censorship Nazi's are snooping in my not so private Private Messages.

I am wondering if the Censors would also do likewise if I posted a link to MyLesPaul, TalkBass, Superior Muscle, Pearl Drummers Forum, Maryland Shooters and any of the other sites I visit.

That's an algorithm; forum software often supports "forbidden" words. And sometimes the regexp find strings containing the "forbidden" sequence and nulls this out. I know that his domain is a forbidden word in ETSG. But i consider it harmless - the owner of the forum of a german tube supplier has put the names of all his competitors on that list. And that is sometimes really strange, mostly because there are always workarounds. Maybe by putting spaces between the letters.

BTW: the Nazis had no or little censorship. They just put every critical soul into the KZs.

Try it out.

Not privy to actual stats but it sure looks like traffic is down over there. As the previous owner of several computer support forums I can only say that a sure way to lose traffic (and thus revenue) is to censor users, especially in pm's. They will learn the hard way I guess.

And folks wondered why I was the first to leave that site when it went all stupid and commercial. Hummmmm....

The Stupid part for me was only the change of how it functioned, and how the resource materials were lost and never restored.
The commercial part I was oblivious to as I believe my Adblockplus took care of that so I did not see it.

Chili,

Another option would be just to PM the person and request his email address. Then, you're unhindered to communicate freely via email.

Smitty, that part is already handled, as when I got his reply, he already sent his email address to me. Thanks

I see,,,,,,,,, it is the forbidden word strings. Well, bea. I will try to PM a few other links to my other forums that interest me and see if they are Forbidden too.

Don't feel bad about forbidden stuff. When I went to school on the rez back in the 50's they beat my left hand with a large wooden ruler for writing left-handed and would beat me with a stick or force me to stand outside for speaking Lakota inside the school. It was forbidden you see to be left-handed and speak the language of your father's. So when I got shoved outside I'd slip over to my horse and ride off. (Yes, I rode a horse to school. Rain or shine. Snow or sleet.) {That last part will please some Kanadian's I'll bet.}
So if you're forbidden from speaking with your friend at that place, I'm pleased you found a way around them. Ya see, you got on your horse and rode off too. (Big grin)

Don't know about ETSG but way back when I'd actually read the conditions for membership before joining a forum I saw they all had a rule about promoting competing forums. The way I see it is if they say don't do a certain thing it's simple ... don't do it or move on. In this case many have moved on. That's how it goes and one day people will be saying similar stuff about TTR. Evolution!

Gasket, I have no qualms about frequenting Etsg or a host of other forums. Beneficial aspects about all of them. But along with evolution is de evo. In the case of Etsg only the loss of references materials rubbed me the wrong way. That and the layout after the update.

Life is way too short to stress over how other forums implement policy.
And in a truly friendly way (with a smile) I'm saying I'm spending too much of my valuable time reading negative things about ETSG.
I'm looking forward and not so much over my shoulder.

I know that there are members on ETSG that do link to other non-Alex owned forums. I won't mention any names so as not to expose a member and have his other guitar site blocked also. However in his ETSG signature file he mentions and links to his non-SG guitar forum.
