Cell Phones...

The title says all...it's a huge trend these days to have a cell phone. Myself I have an LG K4 which works pretty good and some apps can help pass time. But I see so many people glued to their phones as if they were technological slaves. At the bus stop, shopping malls, library, etc. They have to whip out there phones every 5 seconds to check for Facebook updates or text messages. Some people are like clueless zombies wondering around with their cell phones not paying attention on where they are going.

I see people like a couple walking in the mall both texting on their cell phones. Are they texting each other? I saw another fellow with two cell or smart phones in his hands texting on both. Some cell phones are getting pretty big now. I saw one guy at a sub sandwich shop who had a huge cell phone strapped to his side. It was like he had a 27 inch flat screen TV on him. Then there are people who love talking on the phones and letting the whole world know it like they are some important diplomat or something.

Have cell or smart phones made us into technological zombies? I think there is too much dependence on smart phones and it's turning our brains into mush. People have lost the art of conversation and turn their attention to smart phones to keep themselves entertained or something to that effect.

I personally don't bring my smart phone with me when I go out. I leave it at home and if someone calls then they can leave a message. I don't know how some people do it with texting with two thumbs super fast. I guess they are experts. I even saw a teenager on a skateboard texting on his phone. He must be a very good multi-tasker. What is your take on this ever growing phenomena?

I do use my phone a fair bit. I generally don't need to turn on the lap top except for paying bills. I've found Google works just as good on my phone as it does a computer.

I do tend to leave it the car when I go to restaurants. Get hair cut. That sort of stuff. I do take it with me so I can take those spontaneous shots of grandkids.

I use it a fair bit at work. Take picture of a broken part. Send photo to vendor. Get part number and price in return.

Could I live without it. Yes. Do I want to. Nope. Too darn handy.

I feel morons and cell phones don't mix very well. I view it as a tool to talk on period. I wouldn't even have one if it were not because of work. I still have beat up flip phone. That is all I need right now.

At 58 years old I just got my first cell phone. An archaic looking LG Revere3 flip phone.
Just got it for my upcoming trip so I can call the wife and my Wisconsin buds, without racking up outrageous long distance bills from motel phones.
I can also call her now when my plane gets back, so she can pick me up.

If not for the trip, I still wouldn't have one.

... and so it begins... :celebrate2:

Compared to everyone else I know and grew up with, I was fairly late in getting a cell phone. I didn't really see the need (and still don't to a great extent) for being available to everyone all the time. These days, I have to admit, it is a great convenience. I know there are lots of nice people I wouldn't stay in touch with if it hadn't been for the cell phone. That might say something about me as a person, but it's just the way it is. Whenever I think about whether the cell phone is a good thing or not, I simply ask myself: Would you rather NOT have the convenience it brings? To me, the answer clearly is no. I prefer having one to not having one.

I didn't get a cell phone until 2002. My girlfriend bought it for me because she could never find me and I never answered my home phone. I can't imagine not having a cell phone now. I don't like to talk on the phone but I like the convenience of having a phone and the Internet when I do need it or want it. If I forget my phone at home, I don't freak out and go back and get it, unless I need to make calls. People text me all the time and I don't realize it until hours later because my phone stays in my pocket. Some people actually get mad if you don't reply right back. Maybe I'm busy...or in the restroom... or in the shower. Leave me a message like the good Ole days.

I hate cell phones.

Me too Tony! I have chosen not to have one. Been there, done that, I don't need or want to 'live like that'.

What is living like that? Well, although I was never one of the mindless people walking around with their face in a smart phone or doing whatever else in life while attached to & or navigating a cell instead of being involved with what was happening around me, I still never liked being reachable at all times or questioned why I didn't answer, call back or text immediately (& I'm not even talking about the wife here as much as everyone else that knows you have a cell phone & should be available).

If someone needs me, call the house phone. If I don't answer, leave a message. If I want to talk to you, I'll call back,.. if & when I feel like it.

I see this as nothing more than choosing to have control over my own life & spending as much time being present & aware of what is going on around me while simply being involved & making the most out of every day. But to each their own man.

Is that your cell phone playing your song? Time to dance Boy!

I hear ya.

I'm pretty much tied to mine. My cell phone is linked to my work email so I can receive emails from work at any time. Yay!

Usually it's not too bad, but sometimes an email will come in at night or a weekend and I have to decide what to do with it.

They are even beginning to install repeaters in some of the Metro tunnels, so even if I'm underground on the train the texts, emails, and calls can still come in.

Currently, the nature of my job pretty much requires that I have one.

I would say cell phones are more than a trend!

I don't have a land line, have not had one since 2009. No TV subscription, either. I am internet only.

But I was a late starter; first cell phone 2007, a Motorola Q, work issued. It was an early smart phone and I was surfing the net and playing games and texting and taking and sharing photos and videos, etc, right out of the gate. It made work much, much easier and more productive.

Next phone was a Blackberry. I had several. Great business tools! Terrible for browsing the net, though.

Current phone is a Galaxy S7. I bought it outright, brand new. It cost more than my laptop! It is a pretty amazing phone. Well, it is much more than a phone, of course. Great camera, great video cam, powerful browsing device. I have a guitar tuner app and a looper app. If I wanted more, I could easily have a recording studio on my phone.

One of the things I hate in life is wasting my time. With this in my pocket, I am never wasting time. We all spend many hours sitting and waiting. That is life. With a phone like the S7, I can always stay busy, even if it is just catching up with youse guys.

I wonder how many guitars I have bought from my phone while at work waiting for something to do? :hmmm:

If I am in the company of others, I put my phone away. If alone, or with people I am not happy to be with, I am connected to the rest of the world, quite literally.

I'm using an iPhone 7 these days. It's my second iPhone, and my 4th cell phone. I started back in 2009ish with a flip phone. I was reluctant at first, but I got over it. I'm not one to go walking down the street with my nose pointing at the phone though.
My cellphone is a useful tool to me. To me it's a computer, a library, a portable video library, a 24 track digital audio workstation, a camera(photo and video), a gps, a music library, and of course a phone too. Heck, I even used it last week to install a signpost that we put in at a friend's new (to them) cabin in the woods...my phones level app was used to check plumb, while tamping in to place.
