Budget Studio Monitors Advice Please

Alesis always seemed good to me. Heres a set for $130, powered 2 way 5inch speakers, 40w each. Highly rated and been used in studios for decades

Everybody seems to have been going mad over these lately.

A very good friend of mine was recently gifted from his wife, a pair of the Kali Audio LP6's for use in his studio/jam room. He's super happy with his Kali's. And last weekend I met up with him at his place and got a chance to listen them for a few minutes. I can now understand why these are highly regarded at only $150 & 80 watts each and sound great.

If I had a permanent set up I'd jump at them. They're just a wee bit on the large side for my coffee table. :D

My experience with monitors is limited but I'm very happy with my Presonus Eris 3.5

I can't remrber how long I've had them, more than a year, close to two maybe..? They are in the very low end of your budget TOO.

If you google them you'll find lots of reviews.

Hmmmm...those do look interesting...

I have a set of Event 20/20s and have been my workhorse for years. They were $300 a pair in 2007. Non powered, no sub needed. IDK what they offer now, but might be worth checking out.
Everything I've mixed on these sounds exactly the same on any other system (car, home, boombox, whatever).

Update: my son had a pair of the JBL 305P and 1 stopped working, outside of warranty.
I looked it over but found nothing simple or obvious.
He gave me the one and I bought another new one.

So, I have been using them to play along to a few songs.
Its a new / hard but necessary skill for me to split concentration between me playing and in context / time with the "band".

I have them run from the 1/8" headphone out on the laptop, as that is the cable he had.
Not as loud as I would like - should I be doing something different?

If I get or make up mono speaker cables I can run them out of the Focusrite Scarlett, but can I send Youtube audio or mp3 files out to the Focsusrite / USB?

Right now the only thing I have done is mic a cab into Audacity through the Focusrite and play that back through the headphone output.

I am a complete noobie here.

If you hook your computer up to the 2i2 with a USB cable you can direct all of your sound to the monitors. Works great and you use the volume control on the 2i2. Just make sure computer volume is at max.
