Out of the compressors I've tried, I liked the Boss CS-3 the least. It's not awful, just a bit noisy and mediocre. But for the kind of stuff he's playing in the video it might be good I guess. It has many knobs to tweak which might be good or bad, depending on what you like.
My current favourites are the bog-standard cheap new reissue MXR Dyna Comp and DOD FX80B. They both share the same CA3080E chip, but the DOD is more subtle and doesn't colour the tone as much. The new Dyna Comp reissues are nice because they have a standard power connector, better power supply filtering, true bypass and an indicator led (last two don't really matter for me as I never turn the compressor off). I don't think that the "metal can" CA3080 in some reissues is worth it but many might disagree...
There are a few others I'd like to try, although I'm pretty happy with what I have at the moment...
Supposedly the optical compressors (such as the CP101 and the MP Forest Green) are more "transparent" than the OTA based ones. I've never tried one of those. It's kind of hard to say anything about compressors based on youtube videos as you're not the one playing
both those are great pedals-- LITERALLY LIKE NEW IN BOX ----
all but 2 of my amps have --- at least gain and reverb onboard (the modelers have more crap than i care to EVER figure out) gain and reverb are litereally ALL I USE aside from my BELOVED hush pedal that keeps the P90 hums down to a dull roar
so to recap--- my only 2 pedals are a HUSH and an old arse original Electro Harmonix Holy Grail reverb .....thats it ---
No. I've decided not to Adrian, I am like you I have a few pedals sitting around now. Every once in a while I think I should get a pedal. I watch these videos than I get the urge, then I say why did I buy that. I appreciate your offer! Thanks.
