Bonamassa on gear

Doing some lead work today...backed gain way down & vol up. Really found those sweet spots in the guitar..so wild got , 5 LP's out & on each one the spot was nuanced dif..how cool it was to hear what Joe was explaining. I always did play cleanish on 3-5, crunch 5-8 & then dime for leads on guitar vol knob & tone knob for the fullness of tone. I never even heard Joe play other than gear site clips ..would love to jam with him...most my friends speak the language he does...basically call out key or scale for song...comp for others & take the lead when its your turn. Not much to talk about ..just react to the music & your job in the song

2nd CD in. as guitarist...studio guy unplugged my pedal board & said you don't want to ruin your amps tone(marshalls -vol up for main tone) my gain was so low..but the fullness was there..it takes a lot more discipline to play that way but the fullness & note separation & breath between notes was there. not a sonic fizz between the notes...the older music we love so much..lot cleaner recorded then we would think..it was the player skill & great combo of gear that did it...every time i seem to get DSL or above pre amp MV type amp for tone & not power section as main ingredient...i rock it for a few songs then really automatically go back to nothing in the signal path but the guitar --amp & chosen speaker to mic... you are exposed but in a way it simplifies everything,,live work...ride the guitar knobs & enjoy.

I am really getting into riding the guitar volume knobs now. Really makes a huge difference in the sound. These are great videos and the discussion really helps out a lot. I have only been using my EQ and a tiny bit of reverb for effects lately (unless I need a specific effect for something) and it really lets the guitar and amp present their tone.

I am pretty much constantly adjusting the volume control when I play. Tone too but not as much as the volume knob. I'll usually dial in my amps "wide-open" tone with the volume around 7-8 and I'd say while playing I am generally somewhere between 2 and 5 most of the time, and go higher to push things up when needed. I don't generally like the volumes wide open at all, the sound is too shrill and sometimes wooly and uncontrollable.

Don't let the video title fool you. It is pretty informative, especially if you play live

Y’know...there’s something else about that video that kind of grabs me: Bonamassa’s progression toward simplicity.

There’s a lot to be said for that. I talk a lot about processors and stuff and I don’t regret any of that. They serve a purpose for me. But, this video does have me re-evaluating my rig.

Even if I don’t end up changing anything I still think it’s healthy and worthwhile to do a sanity check on our setups from time to time.

I agree. It’s always good to look at other ways. I usually play fairly clean. All the members music with heavy distortion lately has got me experimenting.

Joe talks just like one of us, and even though he has some exclusive gear, he conveys it in a way that is relevant for all of us. I am glad we have him around!
He talks like most i know on the professional side of music. Its so cool in studios & big gigs when its people celebrating the music. When it becomes a competition of some sorts or the bashing... been doing heavy research last 3 weeks on some guitars..real in depth..been to most gear sites...its ugly & getting worse...guy posted about his Sg & by the end of the thread the so called 'experts" tore him a new one & basically got personal with him.insulting his maleness....over him likeing a guitar...i kinda looked at the posters a lil bit & was entertained & laughed at the insecurity..not one has any music whatsoever out there to listen to & they tend to follow threads interjecting their personal agenda evry time..same answer..same ol guitar posted in a thread that has nothing to do with it..same negative comments...its cool to love your gear, really can't put a final statement on anything be better than anything...gear in the right hands makes great music of all genres...in studios..when you do session work..its a blast...no ranking of gear..talked down at..just people as a team getting the best out of ya for the best music ya can make. Joe is a pro..just like we all are supposed to be at our chosen trades...

Took the JB challenge just now...just did rhythm for next song..listening to him..in the video..found my sweet spot....set my amp very clean but letting the speakers compress more....big dif...this is the cleanest tightest recording i ever did yet...had to dig & pick hard to make it emphasize..but when it did..the dynamic of the volume change.(did you see his run & explosion on the video i posted..that burst was insane..when that lead almost scared you cause it was so dynamic. all the sudden it erupted...)...it presents a heaviness but in a thick way..not gained but real big notes that are detectable listening..ever record & go what did i just play when you go to track 2nd guitar? been very guilty of that....tonight was able to hear the space even in the speed..the clarity of this song was worth that 45 min video. also did bass right behind it ..how nice to hear the root & turnaround more clear..now i can hit them together much more tighter....first time been excited to put leads on something in awiile..there is tons of room in the space of the guitar now..kinda make me want to weave a lead now between the notes...into this stuff..mucho !!only got about 30 years or so left to jam...gonna just do it..
