I can't tell when it exactly started. All I know is I was a motocross fan and after the European riders had their Hey Day
MX was centered in So Cal. It did spread quickly and it was not exclusive but in the beginning my favorite riders were there.

There was Kedrowski, Hahna, Tripes, Leshien, Staten, Glover , Ward , never ending list of riders.
I followed Rick Johnsons career.
But the European riders were men of steel.
Roger Decoster 1973 , Carlsbad Ca.
I was there.
I lived near Rawhide Park.

It seems to good to be true.
I love that I had the world in my back yard.
I got to see the best of everything and I am so grateful to have been where I was at a time it all happened.
I feel truly blessed.

I did MotoCross in 1975. Honda 125 Elsinore. I was 20. I was slow... I rode in the "B" Group. the "A" Group was where the guys rode that were way more serious than I was. One Sunday at one of my favorite tracks this kid shows up. Rode in the "A" Group. In a 15 minute moto he was lapping the field before 1/2 way. For you old MotoCross guys.... does the name Mark Barnett ring any bells? He was 15 at the time and went pro a couple years later. That was fun.

I was racing TT at Perris raceway in 73.

My friend from Highschool had a 250 Elsinore. We went to school at Elsinore Highschool.

Much much later , my wife's sister went to school with Jeremy Mc Grath.
He used to practice at Perris Raceway.
He rode a Kawasaki back then. He was just an intermediate before turning pro and getting a Honda sponsor. Later Yamaha.

In 1981 Johnny O mara lead the US team to victory and that changed MX forever.
The US dominated for about 10 years.

Names I’m remembering from the 70s…. Roger Decoster, Bob Hannah, Jim Pomeroy…. Others I’m not remembering. But for me, that was the era.

It was a natural progression. One of the first American riders to stand out in Europe was Brad Lackey. From then on the US could smell victory.
O mara beat the World on a 125 Suzuki with Roger De Coster as Manager.

I was an avid reader of most of the dirt oriented magazines, and subscribed MXA as its first issue, and I was into it’s sister magazine DIRT BIKE.
The Europeans were the dominant forces in the beginning, but us yanks caught on and surpassed them, yea I started with the carrea goggles and a jofa mouth guard, with a duck bill visor
