I used to go way overboard multi-tracking vocals. Lots of vocoding and pitch-shifting (using autotune the wrong way) and various other effects layered in. Sometimes would end up with 10-15 vocal tracks alone. I do everything more raw now, but its still fun to eff with layered tracks from time to time.
down to so little of tracks now..my first adventure was 72 tracks...lol..what a mess
my singer..we get 1 pass at this these..maybe a 2nd to quick double up...unfortunately her brain can not process the exact timing match..BUT..last night..i spent hours on isolated vocal tracks of great stuff on all the hit records ...there is breaths ...even back breathing...slurs...music aint supposed to be 010101000..i am a .50 type player...o.0379
time stretched...all that stuff is sterilizing music..in a 01010 world..that the word 'perfect" is tossed around like an actual usable term..not...especially in music...its emotional..i want feeling....pauses ..nuances..weird notes..weird background stuff....so glad i stopped fidgeting..now its fun..1 rhythm 1 lead..1 bass..1 drum & 1 vocal...as i learn to use the right EQ stacking by choice of speakers & guitars & amps...what a blast it becomes...the capture..1 2 maybe 3 tries..feel it..grab..roll on...music sucks when you make it in individual blocks..then the song is 24 individual tracks..with out the flow...i fought in the studio..he would patch me in..not tell me where..i am like wth...ineed to know where so i can build or chill as the song takes off
..its why i quit the studio..last song we did..i lost my concept to the computer geeks..my guy is good but our ages have separated us... cant stand going in & recording for the kiddies(i do it for fun..get paid..but no more)..they use no amps & midi everything...talk about sterile..then i have to lay a line on it...make the bass bounce the song..by the time we done..basically straitened it all out...part of modern music...is the computer representation of it all..especially on the front end....that in-between that dynamic of the playing a real instrument..its why the faces..the guitar shakes..its the deep down inside feeling coming through ya to the guitar. can not do a drum beat from EZ drummer either, have to start on kit..record then come back & copy somehow into EZ(its never what i want-ever)... do not ever want what someone else did even within a mile of the song...no challenge in that at all
ironically I've had ezdrummer for probably the last eight years or so and I only just this past year learned how to use the song generator. Had always used it with my Alesis ekit live. Its very useful in that sense because you can just tweak your kit for days after recording and still have the live groove.
I'm a computer nerd and I make a lot of electronic music - for that the grid based system is ingenious - but too many musicians have copied those techniques over to the live recording arena and, like yourself, I prefer live music to be tracked live and raw. I dont even bother setting the tempo anymore for live stuff. Just hit arm, record and off to the races!
Nice !! Electronica..is not a negative to me but the actual cool way to use the technology..I wonder if the computer in a way(for a new musician..vs how we had to do it) has become such he central hub...that the actual time..spent...meeting other musicians & perfecting the craft of interaction....no stopping when a blip happens but playing through & even turning the oddity into a new path to take for the song..even live..roll with the dif tempo or a missed beat...react vs always pre planned perfection..its such a blessing when you do get a group of guys..play for 2 hours..no communication other than..call key or scale out & let it rip...miss it..

This is so true! They are trying to take the life out of music with electronic 01010 perfection. Who wants that? I want emotion, I want the hair on my arms to stand up, I want goosebumps and sometimes tears to well up. I want to feel joy, happiness, sorrow and pain. I want to hear the words so I can decipher the message in the song because I feel every great song tells a story and I want to part of that!

I'm going to go even further and out myself to the overuse of technology.
I have stated many times on this and other forums, I am NO guitar player. I dabble and wish I was a good player.
I'm not even able to get through an entire song.
Now the thing is I used my GI Bill to attend Berklee online and I earned a Master Certificate in Guitar! How did I
get through it you ask??? Technology.
I was able to learn just a few bars of a song and then lay down the recordings. Then I just strung them together
to make a complete product. If my timing was off I just adjusted it. If I hit a sour note I deleted it. I used effects
to make the music sound better than it actually was.
I knew going in that I was not going to be able to keep up with the full time music students who were trying to make
a life out of music. I just didn't want my GI Bill to go to waste so I dove in. John Petrucci's wife was in one of my classes...
...talk about peer pressure!
If I would have been forced to do video assignments I would have never made it through, but everything was done audio only.
I completed all my work myself and while I know I wasn't strictly following the rules I never used other peoples work.
I was amazed myself at what I was able to learn to do with the computer software available to get a finished product out!
Now I know how some true musicians are able to make an entire album and play all the parts themselves. I read that Dave
Grohl did the first Foo Fighters album in his basement and then had to put together a band to tour the album!
This guitar thing is just something I've always wanted and it's fun even I completely suck! It helps relieve stress and when
I do get something right or learn something new it makes me feel good. And if you don't believe that I can't play just ask Wav...
This was completely pieced together. You can hear a couple bad edits...

Yeah, I've been reading about how RR had been double+ tracking all his leads for huge guitar sound for years now... I recently had been messin with some vocal stuff, came acrross this video. I thought it was informative, and I'm willing to bet that lots of the things mentioned here could also...
With ya...Reaper is up as i speak.. can zoom in on a customer on Google if they are out of town if they just start naming the buildings they are in front of and get a tech to exact spot they are at
I can run a business sitting at the beach...my phone is my office..tech is amazing..if i use it right, great thing
..i seen social media side affect my kids a lot tho..dif world for them(dif issue really) but it has changed the world so much last few decades,,had to get with it or lose out..

I wish I could take some of the classes I took over again because I have come a long way from what I was 3 years ago when I was taking the Berklee courses.
Back then I basically had to look at the fretboard to see where my fingers were going...at least now I know where I'm at and what strings I'm picking! I can look
at TAB or sheet music and play along with it much better.
My big issue is I have no idea how to just play over a backing track or the like. I don't know where to go, I can't improvise and chord changes are still
nowhere near clean if I can make them at all!
While this is all me, I had to lay down parts and then edit then together and make sure they were in time with the backing track...maybe I should just produce?

Thanks and while I agree it came out really nice I could never play it live. I just don't have the ability right now to make it that good without editing...
...that is where I lack so much and what really makes me envy players that can just pick up the guitar and play. That is what I strive to do.
My problem is that my music is so personal it really is exactly that - personal. I haven't had the urge or the balls to play in front of anyone for a long time now. I was never a glutton for attention to begin with, whenever I played out live I would always stand off to the side basically right next to my amp, jam out my parts, have some beers and go home.

I think the crux of it is that I'm not looking for criticism or acceptance - I've just made this music for me. Maybe one day...
I've always felt that my function was a facilitator; to help other people who don't know how or can't afford it. Technical stuff always came easy to me.

This is a recording of my rhythm tone through my DSL40C with EC823/ECC83S/7025--WA/JJ5751 and 'The Monster' pedalboard with all effects running 100% of the time. This was miked, so this is what you actually hear....
This is recorded with my phone, if the pa was still in the garage, and
Scott would play it back with his phone, on the PA I could record it again by playing along to it and in effect DBL it, or ad a lead line here or there, but on my own this is what ya get.
Cheers
