I am quietly researching to identify the best quality Floyd Rose bridge. Many say the MIG Schallers from the 1980's were highly desireable.

What's the best one to get???

There are original 1980's vintage USA Floyd's commanding outrageous prices. But, I seem to recall the German made Schallers were excellent quality.

The Floyd Rose Special differs only from the original, in that it has zinc saddles and a zinc sustain block instead of brass or steel.

After first appearing on Kramer guitars in the 80s, demand grew following the hair metal craze that dominated the decade. In this period, playing a guitar without the system was somewhat abnormal! To cope with the popularity, Rose licensed his design to companies such as Schaller, who mass-produced his ‘Original Floyd Rose’ system. Today, this is still considered the best version, in terms of tuning stability and reliability.

The Original Floyd is usually seen fitted to high-end guitars, although many affordable instruments feature licensed copies made from cheaper materials. Some of these, such as the 1000 Series Floyd Rose, still offer great performance despite their lower cost.

I just bought a FR Special for my Peavey Mantis project in the works.
It seems to be the same as a FR original, except for the zinc saddles as you previously stated and it's Korean made.
So with steel saddles being available aftermarket, I proceeded.
I looked at the cheap no name ones all over fleabay for $20 - 30 and just didn't want to risk the disappointment.

When the Floyd Special arrived there was no disappointment.
Dropped right in to my routes for it.
I located the points for the mounting studs and drilled away.

It's now happily mounted & waiting on me to make up my mind about how many & which pickups I need.

I'm thinking I'm gonna put a non-fine tuner Floyd on my old Squire, with the studs that go direct into the body wood...
