My 2016 Gibson SG T Series has a volute - the 2016 Gibson Les Paul 50's Tribute does not...

I don't dislike them, but find them to be a item of bygone days.
In otherwords, I just don't see much of them anymore.
They were supposed to strengthen headstocks at the fragile area behind the nut.

Wonder why they went out of favor.

I just love the feel as I am sliding down towards the nut, my thumb rides over them...

Because traditionalists wanted the original 17 degree angle head-stock for period correct specs.

Because headstocks continued to break, even with a volute.

Okay...I can’t say definitively that is the reason why they were discontinued. But, in real life, they did little to nothing towards stopping headstock breaks.

Don’t get me wrong. I like them. I like the way they feel and look.

My ‘74 SG has a volute. It is also my only guitar with a headstock break.

This, more than anything. The "everything was better in the 1950's" crowd poo-poo'd them along with the maple necks. You don't see a whole lot of maple-necked, voluted, 14-degree headstocks breaking off, but make them out of mahogany and pitch them to 17-degrees and the volute isn't helping. I hate all this nonsense about everything needing to be the way it was when my grandfather played guitar! I don't play his music and I do not need his guitar. Oh, I'll take the basic design of a Les Paul or SG but give me modern construction, materials, and refinements please. I love volutes incidentally.
