Battle of the Bands 1968-1980

Maiden is a very solid choice, imho. The best guitar duo. The combination is lethal. The rest of the band , choice very highlķy rated out of hard rock/metal rhythm sections. Then and now.
Maidens first album didn't come out until almost midway through 1980 ...technically they shouldn't even be on this list.

As for the Stones vs. Led Zep
The argument could be made by music historians smarter than I without the Stones there likely may not have been a Yardbirds or a Led Zeppelin (or Iron Maiden for that matter). At the very least the Stones seemed to pay homage and give credit to the American bluesman who inspired them without outright plagiarizing.

The criteria states 1968-1980. By any measurable definition, that would say bands listed from January 1st, 1968 to December 31st , 1980. Maiden was established on December 25th, 1975. They released their first EP, the Soundhouse Tapes on November 9th, 1979. Their first full LP, Iron Maiden, was released on April 11th, 1980

If half of these bands, including the Stones, Cream, The Who, Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix and The Doors make it in? Then that makes this argument moot, as they predate the requirements, having been established AND recording pre-1968

Sorry, I'm gonna wave the Maiden flag with extreme prejudice lol

Whew...... my two suggestions just made it. Rare Earth started in 68 and GFR was 69. Not that anyone else voted for them. Good thing my feeling don't get hurt easily.

Lol I have no issue with any of these bands making it in because they all were active in the timeframe and I happen to like them all. But if we're gonna cite technicalities? Then let's get down and dirty lol

I would have guessed both my listed bands were older. Both were groups the idiots I ran with listened to as we wasted gas driving aimlessly around our little town. That was 1970. The bands were basically both just getting started..... as were we.

Admittedly, Ive only listened to a little bit of Rare Earth but I like them from what I've heard. Grand Funk on the other hand? Listened to plenty of and grew up on them through my dad

The fact that they were involved in the beginning of modern rock is great. Their early work is also great. As a kid growing up they were on the radio constantly but to this day I would rather listen to the Beatles. A corner stone .

... I would rather listen to the Beatles.

Not a fair fight. They'd win any/all contests.

And they did release material, some of their best, during the specified timeframe so it's a mystery how they did not make the list while some comparatively inconsequential bands (Ex. Steppenwolf, Rare Earth, Motorhead, J Geils Band, etc.) did make the cut.

I guess it's down to personal taste as opposed to popularity which is as it should be.
Never liked the Beatles overly myself.

Are we still at just 7 bands locked in?
If we can't add more endorsements, can we start suggesting bands to chop off the list?

How are we to finish this if we are limited by the number of people voting to finalize if we can only put a x on 3 bands ?

I want to put a x on UFO however I gave a x to Rush because they should go a lot further against the big guns in this.

I know UFO will not come out ahead of EVH even though for me they would just because I never liked any Van Halen after the first one.
And Edward had Richard head syndrome.
