I was looking for something lightweight with a recording line out, that would also double as a teaching platform for bass students.

It's just a budget Ibanez. He only likes Peavey....this bass has seen the inside of a lot of clubs...I've never "loved" playing bass, but bass players are always in demand, so I have filled in a bit here and there....

why oh why has no one mentioned the SansAmp?

No flies on the Fender Rumble of course, but if all you wanted was a line out,
then the SansAmp is the way to go.

I had never heard of this Sans Amp previously, but it certainly looks promising. I must say the Fender Rumble 40 has worked very well in a studio setting.
