I was curious about how many famous guys out there favor reissue guitars.
I posted about maybe refinishing my faded 61RI Gibson SG (because I was thinking of making a custom refin, not that I dislike the faded finish in any way) and that post lead to a very interesting debate about reissues not ever being as prone to becoming "vintage" or likeable as a modern standard.
I disagree. Regarding particularly the 61 SG Reissues and the Specials, things get a tad more complex, in my own point of view... These reissues aren't meant to be strictly a "reissue of an instrument considered a classic", like a VOS Custom Shop 61' Les Paul is... Gibson USA makes Sg editions that have many features of the old '61s, but they are definitely modern SGs, in fact. They have no vibrato devices, they have modern Nashville bridges, one ring snot colored tuners, different necks, different colors (considering the standard colors Gibson offered back in the early '60s), humbuckers instead of P-90s...
That's why many people see those as basically and alternative to the Standard model of the year, one with more "vintage" features, but definitely a modern player. And it being so, in MY own opinion, as they sum up decades, they can become kinda something you can date and tag...
Then I wanted to check out if artists out there were playing those... And there are a few.
Patterson Hood (Drive-by Truckers) plays a Faded SG Special
The Shins' James Mercer plays a Faded TV Yellow Les Paul Jr. double cutaway
Lou Reed's Steve Hunter playing a faded SG Special
Mastodon's Brent Hinds playing a '61 Reissue SG
Another one (or maybe the same one, refinished)
Monster Magnet's Ed Mundel
Can you spot eny others?
