Got one of these laying around...battery cover missing, dirty...Looks like a 1984 build, Made In Japan....

Question, how does these work??? Do they create or mimic an over driven sound, or do they influence the amplifier to produce more gain????
 
Reason I asked was I read where it shares op amps and such with a Tube Screamer, so I was curious about how it creates "overdrive" so to speak...

Well, he goes in to it while exploring the pedal in the review. It has an active, two band, boost, and cut eq. Distortion...clipping of some kind(diode, LED, chip...I don’t know...you could probably open yours up and find them easy enough)... looks like it’s got some output options with the secondary output being switchable(direct/soft).
Looks like you have a fairly cool old 80s dirtbox.
 
I see at least 1 TA7558S...an opamp found in a lot of the TS-9s.
There are two other side mount ics that are obscured (the labeling) in the pic.

Looks like a few diodes that could be there as clippers- between the output jacks.

I should look a little bit more for a schematic or layout, but it doesn’t come up under a casual search.
 
I cleaned it up pretty good. It's old, that's for sure. Years and years ago, one of my friend's had this pedal. he used it on a Marshall JTM30 combo. As I recall, he would turn the gain on the amp way, way down and boost it (I think??) with the Metal Master. I seem to recall I ended up with it in a trade????
 
Just found an Arion SCH-1 in it's original box. have no idea how I ended up with it...Gray case too, likely early 1980's????
 
You could do that. It is it’s intended purpose-distortion in to a clean(ish) amp.
Think of it as a dirt channel in front of your amp. The right knob is gain. The left knob is overall level. If you go higher than unity, you’ll be “pushing” your amps pre.
Be happy, and use it as it was intended...make cool noises with it.

Here's my issue. My amps all have a basic 2 band EQ on the clean channels woth no mid control.....the red channel has three bands and a contour.
 
That’s not an issue, it’s a toolbox inventory.
Decrease bass, and treble=boost mids.
Increase bass, and treble=cut mids.
I’m sure you can work with that...others have worked with less.
