Are you meticulous with your gear

Not the "afford it" part that makes it stupid to me. I can "afford" to do a lot of pointless, wasteful things (not destroy perfectly good guitars mind you), but I don't. Because it is pointless, wasteful and stupid. He looked like a fool doing it then as he does now, and like Robert said, it's not like he was some gunslinger player. TBH, I realize that stupid shtick of his really put me off The Who as a kid. Utter moron.

So in other words you're not too fond of Pete?:hmmm::D He wasn't no Steve Vai or Yngwie Malmsteen but he sure was a dynamic guitar player for his time. So what did you think of Jimi Hendrix burning his guitar at the Monterrey Pop Festival back in '67? Was he stupid also for doing that?

These guys who smash guitars...Jimi, Pete, Ritchie, etc...
Why? None of them needed to prove anything to anybody.
None of them needed to do that. Their playing speaks for them.
(OK, Pete isn't exactly the ultimate soloist but can you think of
a better rhythm player offhand?

I would be more impressive if after each show they donated
those guitars to the music department of a local school.

Exactly!!!!

To answer your original question... Nope. I take care of my stuff but I use it hard. I buy used quality stuff for the most part, but I stress test my gear... hell...I have been stress testing my body for a looong time!

Yup .... Not quite 47 and Ì'm still hard on the equipment!

My '68 Bassman is named "The World's Loudest Ashtray "for a reason!

I always try and take good care of my stuff. I wipe down my guitar after playing because I have corrosive sweat (tmi). Heck, I park my Camaro out in the south 40s, 8+ years later and not a single door nick.

When you are a home player, it is not using it, it is where you leave it that gets you in trouble. Toppled stands, sliding down after being leaned on something, stepped on because you were only going to leave it there for "a second", etc.

Very true.

As a young guy, I was always hanging out at Buck's studio - taking, learning helping out - and I just mimicked what I saw.

All of my gear had flight cases, so nothing ever got banged up. In 30 years, the worst damage my gear ever suffered was a torn grille cloth.

This is an old photo of my 30 year old Squirecaster. The routs have changed and there's fu'll copper now, but that guitar has been everywhere and still looks good...

Now I have worn through several pickguards in that time with Fender Heavy Picks...and its been leveled and crowned so much that the frets are almost gone, but it survived.
