I have a Mustang I, and for real it is my most used amp, because it's the one I use everyday at home. It actually sounds pretty amazing for a 1x8. I really think I would not have a problem mic'ing it up for small gigs if I had to.Id say no, all bases arent covered for me but that's debatable on how you'd look at it i suppose
I have a couple small combo amps ( a 15W x 8 Squier Champ and a 20w x 8 Fender Mustang 1) but to me that's not quite small club/ level as that would be something more along the lines of a 2x10, 1x12 or 2x12 combo or small head and cabinet set up. You could always mic it of course and lots of bands do that, but there's a missing tier there in my opinion.
Bigger playing? Sure, I'd say I'd have that area covered with a Marshall JCM900 2500 SLX 50w, JCM2000 DSL50 and Marshall Mode Four 350w. Cabinets could go into a few different configurations like half stack, full stack, half and full or dual fulls ( 2 JCM900 1960A 4x12 300w slants and 2 Mode Four MF400B 400w 4x12 straights)
I suppose using a 50w head and one 4x12 into the stereo configuration, you could essentially go 2x12 at 8ohm, but thats a lot more difficult to lug around compared to a smaller cab
Im with him
besides now days doesnt everyone just run a pedal board to front of house and move on ...................................
Everywhere here you would use an amp. For dispersal, most places mic it even if at lower volumes. Just keep up to the drummer, barely in some cases. No, actually they don't. Many small places still use the PA for vocals only, or maybe keys and acoustic guitar. It's up to the band to have the right gear and a balanced sound. It's good to have a friend telling you what needs to be adjusted as your playing, as the house guy usually goes off for a smoke and a beer as soon as you start playing. Then he's not to be seen again until he tells you that you have one song left in your set.

I don't think I've ever tried one of the micro cubes.
I have a ZT amps lunchbox jr for my road trips. Its a nice little jammer. No fx built in but it sounds great for something so tiny. It can power two 9v pedals though.

hell, i could play anywhere just with the helix, but you know how us tube amp guys are. i have a headrush frfr112 for it too. its a little bassy if i leave it on the floor like a monitor, but still sounds great for the money.
what are your current amps?

I'm with RVA!I have the EQUIPMENT to play anywhere. After that, I could run into trouble.
Yeah in terms of PA my band Whiplash has quite a lot of stuff. Personally I own a bunch too.Yes on bass & guitar & could barely get ya through a gig on drums but we will make it. Luckily can deal with call key or scale or progression out from so much bass work over the years that if i can follow the guitarist & learn his patterns quick can lock in & make the gig work.
