Anyone ever use the Gibson P-94's in a guitar, and if so how did they stack up compared to a real P-90 ?

Am wondering if anyone has used the Gibson P-94's in a guitar and how did they stack up compared to a real p-90 ?

A friend had them in one of his guitars and I got to play it quite a bit.
I'd say they sound just as bad as P-90s. Same ragged noisy mess.

I know, I know, people love P-90s and I have tried to like them but I just think they are awful and ifnyou have a guitar routed for hums you are better off with hums.

I bought a P-94R to put in my '68 SG Junior because it had been routed for a humbucker before I bought it. Because it was the neck pickup, it didn't seem to suit the guitar well. When I bought it, it was all I could find cheap on ebay. I thought it was too underwound for what I am doing, and sounds I'm looking for. I am thinking of getting a similar bridge position pickup (Gibson P-94T or maybe Manlius) to go with a build or project guitar. Mattias Bärjed of The Soundtrack Of Our Lives uses them in all of his guitars, and I've always loved his live sound. I've seen them live five times, and they always sounded great.

I get the stick with Humbuckers advice, appreciate that thought, thanks. I have 4 Les Pauls, and I wanted each to have a different tone. Was wondering if it was worth the high cost to source a set of the P-94's ( and they are very hard to find), although I've been told a humbucker coil tapped is about the same. I have two setups of those currently.

Not Gibson p94s but humbucker size p90s from Ken Rose. “Mozarts”
They don’t have the p90 growl. Beautiful clean tones. Keep in mind that when you make a p90 in humbucker size, it becomes a Jazzmaster pickup. And that’s the sound you get. I put three in my G400 and fully intend to replace them with buckers this summer when I complete the refinish.IMG_0458.jpeg

@Thatbastarddon has Manlius Goats Growl P-90s in humbucker size in his V. I’m pretty sure he’s happy with them, and maybe he’ll add some feedback when he has a chance.
I’m always a bit gunshy of posting when someone specifically posts questions about “P94” pickups.
That said, yes…I have the Manlius humbucker sized P90 types in the neck position in two guitars. I like them a lot.

Check out the bobbin on that baby…

I changed humbuckers to Tonerider P94 clones in a relatively cheap Epi Les Paul, and my son reported, the guitar was on a different level. But the Gibson Les Paul Studio with burstbuckers still was in a different league (but that very guitar is one of the really good to outstanding guitars from the cheap worn brown series...)
