It makes the strings pass straight over the nut, which ought to reduce friction in the slots. However as you say, it also provides extra friction points of its own. I agree the pulleys on the SB would seem to make more sense. Of course, you could lubricate the TG - but if you were going to do that, why not just lubricate the nut itself?Looking at this thing closer, to me all it does is shift the nut pinch point behind the 2 E strings.
At least the String Butler has rollers to help the strings to move smoother.
This bar just shift the point at which they may be pinched. I believe.
I've never used either, and I'm really just offering my gratuitous opinions on the designs. Both are solutions for a problem I don't have, so for me they're useless. But they might be life-changing for someone plagued with a favorite axe that has serious problems.
It's entirely possible to like a guitar so much that you're willing to live with issues that would be dealbreakers for anybody who wasn't so fond of that particular instrument.
